Foundation Learning Community News

Term 4, Week 6

Transition days are fast approaching, we will be heading to the 1/2 space for a look around and lesson this week and be preparing for the big change with Social Stories and lots of discussion. The Foundation students will have 4 morning sessions on Fridays (beginning Week 7) where they will get to meet their new teachers and participate in some 'getting to know you' activities. Exciting times to think that the end of our first year of schooling is so close!

We had a wonderful InitiaLit Celebration Day last Friday. Thank you to families for supporting their child/ren to dress up as their favourite sound. We made cookies, read with friends, had a disco and received a certificate in recognition of our efforts. See below for some photos of the day.

Literacy:

Now that we have completed all of the sounds for the Foundation year we are reviewing all that we have learnt. A big focus is learning to read and spell our 'tricky' words. These are high frequency words that we have not learned the sounds to decode yet, these include words such as one, you, ball. The words are found in our readers and are very useful to support our writing. We hope that all children will have the first 20 words confidently by the end of Term 4. If you would like to support your child please refer to the Literacy Practise Books which are sent home with readers folders.

We had a special visitor on a Friday, Kai the dog! Blake and his mum were kind enough to introduce Kai to the cohort giving us a real life experience to inspire our writing!

Inquiry:

We are looking at stories and how they are told, learning about the structure of narratives, brainstorming ideas for characters and settings, and beginning to write our own stories. The culmination of our efforts will be showcased with an open classroom where we invite families to visit and read our creations. Watch this space!

Numeracy:

Measurement has been our focus for the past few weeks. We have learned about length, mass and capacity. This is a great hands on area of maths and the students have excelled in their participation and understanding.
