From Mr Coppin
Celebrating our Grandparents!
We were incredibly delighted that the rain held, then cleared as we welcomed 200 plus Massie House Grandparents and family friends to the Fair Hill on Monday morning 8 April 2024. Research shows that having connection trusted adults beyond the immediate family is such protective factor from a social emotional perspective.
In addition to Preparation to Year 2 classroom visits our nearest and dearest were dazzled by marvellous Massie Music performances. Deputy Head Prefect and Prep starter Lucy Scott took time to address our audience and remind them that Grandparents Day was one of her fondest Kambala memories. Taking the opportunity to thank her own Grandmother who was in the audience. Ms Danvers also thanked our Grandparents for playing such a pivotal role in being powerful supporters and role models for their young granddaughters’ lives. You know there are still times in my life when I reflect and think to myself, “What would Nana Coppin do?” and the answer will set me on the right path. That is a testament to the power Grandparents have in the lives of their Grandchildren.
Morning tea in the Harbourview Rooms served by our Year 6 Leaders was a fitting end to a wonderful morning celebrating the gifts that grandparents bestow on their grandchildren.
I have been delighted by the parental response to my article last week about the work of Dr Jonathan Haidt. I would like to share an additional article kindly shared with me linked to the work of Dr Haidt.
The environment in which kids grow up today is hostile to human development.
Day of AI (Artificial Intelligence) - Friday 3 May, 2024
On Friday 3 May, Year 5 students will be immersed in a day of learning about Artificial Intelligence. Students will develop a clear understanding of what AI is, and what it is not. They will learn how machines gain intelligence and explore the three key components of machine learning: collecting datasets, training an algorithm, and predicting on new data. They will see this in action by using an online tool, Google Quick Draw, where a computer using AI will predict what each of the students are sketching even before the students are finished drawing their images.
Students will then learn about algorithms and try to write their own algorithm. The students will work with another online tool, Teachable Machine, to learn how to train a machine to recognise objects. They will train their own machine to be able to recognise and make a distinction between images of hands making rock, paper or scissors shapes.
In using Teachable Machines they will learn about algorithmic bias, an important and worrisome part of AI. Students will then learn about deep fakes, and will participate in activities and discussions that encourage them to think about how to use such powerful technology such as AI, in ways that are responsible.
The session will be led by Ms Olga Ibrahim, ICT Integrator, and Ms Ky-Lee Murphy, Director of Curriculum. The session will run from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm.
