I was very proud to see the students participate in the Cross Country. A great effort by everyone. Well Done!

How exciting was our opening of the Reading Olympics? It is important to remember to read to your children and to listen to them read, then to record how long they read. We are also recording our reading every morning in class.

The students are absolutely loving our Inquiry top of old and new toys. The conversations and interactions often take up a whole lesson. Fantabulous Engagement!!

We also had a great Maths Pirate Day adding up our Pieces of Eight.

Please remember to do our homework to reinforce our learning.

Year 2

It’s certainly been a busy start to Term 2!

Congratulations to all students for their great efforts in the Cross Country last week. Everyone showed a positive attitude towards participating and got into the house spirit by donning some fabulous blue and yellow outfits!

After the Cross Country we were surprised by seeing all the teachers dressed up too, but this time in costumes representing different kinds of books. This was for the launch of Wedderburn College’s first Reading Olympics. The Reading Olympics are all about encouraging and celebrating reading. Grade 2 students are already an enthusiastic bunch of readers, so we’ll take the Reading Olympics in our stride. We are asking families to keep up the great home reading routines already established and to also start recording the minutes of home reading in diaries so we can keep a tally. We will record our time spent reading at school too. I believe there will be some prizes up for grabs for our Reading Olympians…

Within our inquiry into water, Grade 2 has investigated Wedderburn College to find the many different ways that the school uses water. We have also conducted experiments to see what happens when rain falls on different surfaces and have observed a model of groundwater and created labelled diagrams based on this model.

Last week we were lucky enough to have a visit from Aria’s mum and their Eclectus Parrot named Syd. We were able to ask many questions about this incredible bird species and have since watched a video about Eclectus Parrots and written facts about them.

We are spotlighting positive relationships within our wellbeing curriculum across Term 2. So far we have practised the interpersonal skills of turn-taking, playing fairly and using kind words through playing Monopoly in small groups.

Students also demonstrated impressive empathy in our discussions about ANZAC Day and the significance of poppies in commemorating soldiers who served.

We have been focusing on choosing and using efficient addition strategies in maths lessons, such as counting on, using doubles and near doubles, tens facts, bridging through ten and the jump strategy. You will have noticed that a maths worksheet has been coming home in the student dairy each week along with a spelling worksheet. We understand that after school can be a busy time, but are asking that one piece of homework is completed in addition to home reading: the spelling sheet or the maths sheet. If you’d like to do both, that’s great too, but we don’t want to make things overwhelming:)

Year 4 & 5

The past two weeks have been busy in the 4/5 classroom. It was great to see so many students involved in the cross country and wearing their house colours with pride and enthusiasm.

The reading olympics have started and the marathon is in full swing, nightly reading is to be recorded in the diaries and signed off by someone at home.

In Maths, we have been working on multiplication and division and showing our knowledge using arrays.

As Thursday is the Calder Winter sports, we will go to the Library on Friday for this week only.

Reminders:

Chewing gum is beginning to make another appearance in our class. A reminder, chewing gum is not permitted at school.
Homework Club is running Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays at lunchtime in Room 11. If you are finding it challenging to complete Homework at home, please utilise this time.
If you are absent from school, please send an email to let your teachers know to ensure you catch up on any work that is missed.

Cross Country

Calder Winter Sports

Mr P’s Secondary PE Student of the Week is: Will Baldwin

Will consistently displays the expected behaviours of active participation and completing all classwork and homework in our Health/PE classes. He is willing to share ideas and give all activities his best efforts. Well done Will, keep up the good work.

Miss M’s Primary PE Student of the month is: Freya Dean. Freya has displayed our three values throughout PE lessons. She carefully follows directions and has been participating more frequently in classroom talk. Thank you, Freya, for being such a wonderful role model!
