Year 1 & 2

What's happening in our cohort?

Literacy

In Spanish, the students are currently learning about information reports. The goal is to investigate in depth about Preston and its places and to create an independent information report in Spanish. We would have to acquire first vocabulary about the city and review the structure needed for this particular type of text.

In English Writing for Year 1 and 2 students, we are also learning about the genre of information reports. Through engaging activities, we will be practicing selecting topics, gathering facts and understanding text structure and language features. All vital skills for effective communication.

In English Reading, the students are focusing on comprehension and decoding strategies:

  • Blending sounds and decoding unfamiliar words
  • Making connections, inferring and asking literal questions about a text

In English Grammar, the students are learning about:

  • Nouns, verbs and adjectives
  • Identifying fragments and sentences
  • Identifying sentences types
  • Editing sentences using punctuation
  • Expanding sentences using: before, after, then

Mathematics

In Spanish, we are visiting the world of fractions. It would be great if parents could support the topic at home with the typical activity of cutting a pizza into slices. We will also be revising addition and subtraction.

In English, we are doing fractions, shape and location during Week 1 to 6. Then Week 6 to 10 we will be focusing on statistics and addition and subtraction.

Inquiry

In Inquiry we are learning about cultural diversity. We will be learning about food, language, clothing and traditions. Some of the questions we will be asking is:

  • How is my life different or similar to people in my class?
  • What is my family background?
  • What traditions do I have at home that come from my cultural heritage?
  • What can I learn from other cultures?
  • How can we respect and embrace other cultures?

Canción

Our students are rehearsing the famous ¨Loca loca¨song in Spanish. This is a song that Sergio´s music teacher from University taught him for Women´s day. He and his classmates would visit the hospital of Almería and sing it with the children with cancer. It has a huge sentimental meaning. And Newlands kids LOVE IT!

Parent helpers

Each double class teacher would have sent by now a schedule with all our beautiful parents´ names on it. We are also displaying the schedule on our front door to give other parents the opportunity to write their names down in blank spaces. If you have any question about it, don´t hesitate to contact your teacher.
