What is it that helps motivate you to get moving early on a cold Saturday morning, or bleak Friday night, in order to get your daughter to her hockey game or water polo game?

What is it that helps drive the laughter and the giggles as your daughter takes to the netball court for the very first time?

No matter the day or night, and regardless of the chosen sport, our motivators will often be shared. The chance to have one on one conversation with her on the way; the excuse for a hot chocolate to warm the hands; a catch up with other parents to spend time, and swap ideas; and the opportunity to watch your child take part in a sporting experience that brings so many benefits to her. The value of sporting participation is difficult to deny - bringing positive energy to not only the player, but to the many participants in the wider College community.

The rewards are many, win or lose - for the player, the spectator, the volunteer, and the cheer-leading crew. College sport is a fantastic entry point for children to try new pursuits in a safe environment, and to get a taste of what various sports can bring them. Alongside the many physical and mental health benefits sit a number of other positive chances to feel the thrill of being part of a team, boost pride, share in the spirit of collegiality, and be an active part of a representative tribe. The enthusiasm to defend in goal, to push forward when the muscles are hurting, to tackle both the opposition and the cold, frosty morning is all part of the inner drive, filling us with pride and an unfettered sense of defending our College pride.

All of these factors combined can contribute to the desire to take part, and the willingness to create the chance for children to immerse themselves in the battle - sometimes the battle to get out of the warm car and onto the pitch; sometimes the battle of intercepting the ball before it hits the opposition’s goal. There are plenty of sporting pursuits on offer here that can satisfy this quest - from netball to hockey, tennis to water polo, AFL to athletics, soccer or cricket.  The list is endless and the rewards countless.

Field Day

On Tuesday our Kinder to Year 6 students participated in our Field Day at the University’s Rugby Oval. This day holds a special place in my heart as it was many years ago now, when I was working with the Secondary Leaders, that they came up with the idea of Field Day. They were adamant that they wanted a day where the whole school can come together and support one another and this day certainly delivers.

Whether you are a student who is a runner, a walker, someone who loves a challenge or just loves to laugh and be with those who make you smile, Field Day allows for this.

As always these events just do not happen, and it takes a village from HPE, to Maintenance and IT departments to the rest of the staff and our parent volunteers.  However, a special thanks must go to Petra Dennis, Head of HPE for the massive amount of work leading up to and on the day.

Year 6 Canberra Evening

Thank you to those Year 6 parents who came out in the cold and attended the Canberra Information Evening last week. They heard all about the fabulous adventures that their daughters will get up to at the end of Term 3.  A reminder to please return the Participation and Medical forms by tomorrow (Friday 10 May) to your daughter’s class teacher.

Year 6 Leadership Day

Tomorrow a group of Year 6 students will head to The Hutchins School to work with Year 6 students from a number of other schools exploring the idea of leadership. Thanks to the staff involved, especially David Wierenga who will be running a STEAM based session. More details about what the girls did on the day will be part of next fortnight’s The View.

Learning Conversations - Term 2

Last term we held our Term 1 Learning Conversations, which provided time for you to meet and discuss the progress of your daughter. A reminder that these conversations will occur again in Week 9 of Term 2 and like Term 1, it is an expectation that all attend.  Further information will be sent in the coming weeks.

Mother's Day

On Sunday many families will come together to celebrate Mother’s Day.  It is a significant celebration as it honours the profound impact mothers and other significant women such as grandmothers, step mothers, foster mothers, aunties and other mother figures, have on the lives of society as a whole. The day gives people an opportunity to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of mothers everywhere, acknowledging the pivotal role in nurturing families.

It can also be a day of tremendous sadness and sorrow for those within our community who mourn the loss of a mother, who have not had that significant person in their lives for whatever reason or have not had the opportunity to foster a relationship that is one of care, love and support.  And for those of you out there where this is your reality we hope that the day brings comfort and kindness.

Since the day I was small

Till the day I became tall

Since I began understanding things

Till the day I got my own wings

Your love has never fallen short

You have been my only support

I want to hold you tight and hug you

I just want to say thank you.
