VCE VM Excursion
The Year 11s and 12s in PDS (Personal Development Skills) were working on team building and what it meant to become a leader and also learn about different work opportunities for their Work Related Skills class.
On the 22nd of April the class went on an excursion to Beechworth to practise these skills and to work together as a team especially solving the mystery in the Escape Room, but first we went to Bilson’s and had a tour of the place, we learnt the background history of the building and why it was named “Bilson’s”. Bilson’s is a brewery established in 1865 in Beechworth, North-East Victoria and is one of the oldest continuing beverage manufacturers in Australia. It operates from a complex of heritage brewery, constructed in 1872-73. We also learnt that the cordial ‘fruit tingle’ is actually made up of four different cordials just mixed together consisting of lemon ginger, raspberry vinegar, mint julep and blood orange.
Bilson’s arranged for us to hear from different employees about their work experiences. We got to ask questions about employment and hear lots of different tips. The person who gave us the tour was a WHS graduate who told us to choose something we love doing as a career and encouraged us to try different things.
We also got to have lunch at Bilsons to fill us up before heading to the Escape Room.
The Escape Room (run by someone who was also a WHS graduate!) was located at the old Asylum. This was a challenge for everyone but especially Makybe and Jett as they had to lead each group. They aimed for everyone to get involved and work as a team and focused on how, as leaders, they could bring everyone together to get involved in the activity. As we walked into the Escape Room there was a games shop and we got to check out games we could have potentially bought! We separated into two groups to complete the puzzle of a Murder Mystery in two different rooms.
Everyone listened to each other and helped out. It was very enjoyable for everyone and overall everything was really fun.
