Secondary 9/10

 9/10A

In Secondary 9/10A, we have a diverse range of interests when it comes to learning. We cherish our experiential days just as much as our regular classroom routines. It's been remarkable to witness the significant growth our students have undergone since the beginning of the year.

This term, our excursions have been both enriching and educational. We've explored Museums and Botanical Gardens, aligning these experiences with our Discovery studies focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories. Alongside these outings, we've engaged in a variety of activities at school, from baking Anzac biscuits to embarking on virtual excursions to the MCG. We've also immersed ourselves in Reconciliation Week activities and had a blast making cinnamon rolls.

In terms of learning achievements, students have completed the text "The Black Cockatoo," demonstrating their ability to recall information and insights gained from the book.

In Maths, students practise their addition and time telling skills through practices.

Meanwhile, in Discovery studies, students have delved deep into understanding the history of colonization in Australia.

It's been a joy to witness the enthusiasm and dedication our students bring to their learning journey.

9/10 C

Wow, what a term! Secondary 9/10C can hardly believe that half the year is gone already. I’m so incredibly proud of what the young people in my classroom have achieved this term. They have all worked to the best of their abilities, supported each other and taken every opportunity they can. We’ve had so many wonderful experiences that I thought I’d let the students tell you all about it.

Hi everyone, every Friday we do STEAM and I do Pet care. I joined pet care because last term I saw Ollie around and he was soooo cute. In pet care we went to the cat protection society, we played with the cats in there, and we are going back later this term. Inside the classroom we learn about how to take care of all kind of animals. Pet care is a 10/10 experience, because who doesn’t love pets?

Two weeks ago, 9/10C made cinnamon scrolls. The ingredients were butter, cinnamon, Greek yoghurt, brown sugar, and flour. First, we made the dough which was made from flour and Greek yoghurt, then we prepared the filling. The filling was made with cocoa powder, butter, and cinnamon. After that we rolled up the scrolls and cut them up ready to go in the oven. Once we done the scrolls, we made some yummy icing. Finally, we had some Fika which is sitting down and chatting to your friends. So 9/10C made some tea and delicious hot chocolate.

The trip that I enjoyed this term is going to the Melbourne Museum. I like it because it is very interesting, and I love to look at all the things that they put on display. I also learnt a lot of information about how people live back in the olden days. In the Museum I also got to have a look at what the movie cinema looks like in the olden days. I had so much fun and I want to go there again.

In Fit for Life this term, I chose Bounce. It's a fun and cool place to spend time with your family and doing obstacles. Some activities you can do are dodgeball, basketball and climbing. Another thing I like to do, you can even have fun in a foam pit. You even got to wear special socks and a wristband.

In Maths we’ve been learning about vertical addition and subtraction. We learnt how to regroup numbers to solve the sums. We also did worded problems. I’m really happy with my Maths this term because I’m learning more than I’ve ever learnt before.

9/10E

As we reach the end of an eventful term, it’s a pleasure to reflect on the incredible experiences and achievements of our Secondary 9/10E class. This semester has been filled with dynamic learning opportunities and memorable moments that have contributed to both personal and academic growth.

This term, STEAM has offered students hands-on engagement in various subjects. From kitchen science experiments to construction projects, business management classes, and artistic endeavours, the students have embraced these classes with enthusiasm, and it has been another great way for them to engage with students in the wider 9/10 cohort.

Additionally, the electives and Fit for Life activities have been a fantastic way for our students to explore their interests and maintain an active lifestyle.

Many of our class members have excelled in Interschool Sports, representing Concord School with pride and demonstrating our school values in a positive and mature manner.

A highlight has been the introduction of the trampoline park, Bounce, as a new Wednesday morning option. This has been a thrilling and fun-filled outing that the boys can look forward to again next term.

Our term highlights also include several excursions that have provided real-world exposure and hands-on learning experiences tied to our Discovery Unit. The visit to the Botanical Gardens was particularly impactful, where students participated in an Indigenous cultural immersion tour, gaining valuable insights into Aboriginal culture and heritage. Our trips to the Melbourne Museum and the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) further enriched our learning, offering students the opportunity to explore history, art, and culture in engaging and interactive ways.

As we conclude this wonderful first semester, it’s hard to believe we are already approaching the second half of the year! The growth and enthusiasm displayed by the students of 9/10E have been wonderful and it will be great to continue this momentum into Term 3.

Dear Concord Community,

We’re excited to share the highlights of Term 2 with you! 🌟

Student Teacher Experience Our class welcomed student teacher Kayla Dimasi for three weeks. Kayla enjoyed her time with our charismatic students, contributing to their learning journey.

Connect To Country at Royal Botanical Gardens:  Continuing our Indigenous culture and history theme, we engaged with the Royal Botanical Gardens’ Connect To Country program. Students identified native plants, discussed Kulin nations, and explored Woiworung culture through string making and clothes crafting.

Anzac Day Commemoration:  We honoured Anzac Day by learning about the contributions of our servicemen and women. The Greensborough RSL provided an educational experience, allowing us to see and touch used munitions. We also discussed the logistics of taking large animals to the front lines during wartime.

Swedish Traditions: FIKA:  Our class enjoyed cooking experiences, including making cinnamon rolls. We learned about the Swedish tradition of FIKA, emphasising the importance of spending quality time with friends and family.

Indigenous Contributions and Societal Impact:  Throughout Term 2, we focused on Indigenous Australians’ contributions. Students completed research tasks, discussing barriers to success and the significance of societal contribution. Most students enjoyed talking and writing about their favourite indigenous celebrity.

9/10G

It's been such an exhilarating and unforgettable term for Secondary 9/10G! We've had countless amazing experiences throughout Term 2, and we can't wait to share some of our highlights with you.

Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum

We kicked off the term with an incredible excursion in Week 1 to the Melbourne Museum. Our visit to the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre was truly enlightening. We delved into the survival stories of the Aboriginal people, celebrating their vibrant cultures through historic artifacts, mesmerizing performances, captivating storytelling, and stunning artwork. Walking through the Milarri Garden, we marvelled at the eels in the pond and discovered indigenous plants and flora significant to Aboriginal heritage. Our exploration also included the fascinating Melbourne Story exhibit, the serene Forest Gallery, and the awe-inspiring Victoria the T. rex exhibit.

ANZAC Biscuits

In the food tech room, we whipped up the most delicious and chewy ANZAC biscuits! This was a fantastic sensory experience where we applied our numeracy skills to count ingredients, weigh and measure them, and estimate the quantities and volumes needed for the recipe. Our collaborative skills shone as we worked together, followed instructions, and made decisions. We also expanded our vocabulary with new words related to cooking and explored terms connected to our five senses.

Royal Botanical Gardens Tour

Our Heritage Walk at the Royal Botanical Gardens was a remarkable experience, deepening our understanding and appreciation for Indigenous customs and heritage. Guided by Aboriginal experts, we learned about eel traps, their sustainable design, and examined Indigenous artifacts like boomerangs and possum skin cloaks. As we walked, we discovered the traditional uses of plants for food, medicine, and tools, enhancing our knowledge of local flora and its cultural significance.

Sensory Cooking Experience: Cinnamon Rolls

Our latest culinary adventure was making scrumptious cinnamon rolls! We partnered with another 9/10 class, doubling the fun. We learned new vocabulary related to baking and watched a video on how to knead dough, which turned into a hands-on sensory experience. The students loved getting their hands dirty and experimenting with the dough. We also discovered that cinnamon rolls originate from Sweden, where Swedes enjoy a coffee break ritual called Fika, combining coffee with a sweet treat every day. This cultural connection added an interesting layer to our experience and broadened our horizons.

This term has been filled with learning, excitement, and unforgettable moments. We can't wait to see what adventures the next term holds!

9/10H

This brings us to a close of one chapter for 9/10H and another exciting one about to commence. I want to thank all of the fabulous students for being such a fun, respectful and engaging group. The best part of this year is that every day I look forward to coming to Concord and being just one cog in the functioning of a well oiled machine that is Secondary 9/10H. I pass the reins across to the very capable hands of Isabelle Mazzarella, who will be a marvellous addition to the group and the students are excited to have her as their teacher for the rest of 2024.

In the meantime, here’s a few highlights from the term that’s been:

Botanical gardens

Me and some of the 9/10 section went to the Botanical Gardens, which is near the city. We got on the bus for the long drive. When we arrived there we put our bags away and met our tour guide. The tour guide's name is Jakobi. He took us on a tour of the beautiful park. He took us down to see some plants, trees, lakes and a snake grass where we can make sounds with it.

Overall it was very good and I enjoyed walking around on the sunny day.

Melbourne Museum

On the 18th of April, the whole of 9/10 went to Melbourne Museum to learn about the history of Melbourne and to see some Aboriginal items. My favourite part was seeing Phar Lap and watching the old footy games as well as the old house. We also saw some eels and turtles in a lake. At the Forest Gallery we saw some parrots and some other things like waterfalls and stick insects.

NGV Excursion

On the 23rd of May 2024, we went to Federation Square. On the bus ride I was talking to my friends. We stopped at the Botanical Gardens. We walked to Federation Square and the first place we went to was the Koorie Heritage Trust. We walked into the calm room, it was super relaxing. We then went to the Ian Potter Centre to look at some beautiful art. I liked the art because of their colours and designs. After this we went to Birrarung Marr, there was a big eel on the path. We then walked back to the Botanical Gardens, we went inside the bus, and they took us back to School.

Cinnamon Scrolls

On the 6th of June 9/10 H made cinnamon scrolls. We started by making the dough. We mixed some flour, yoghurt and milk together into a bowl. Then we got the dough out of the bowl and placed it onto a cutting board and put a hint of flour on the board to make it not sticky. We rolled the dough until it was stretched out. In a separate bowl we mixed cinnamon, brown sugar and melted butter and then poured that onto the dough. We then rolled the dough together and sliced it. Afterwards we cooked it in the oven in the Discovery Centre.

It was very delicious with a mug of hot chocolate.

STEAM Business Admin

Every Friday I do Business Admin for STEAM. We have different tasks that we need to complete. We go to all the sections and I collect the recycling bins and put them in the recycling skip. I enjoy emptying the bins because I get to walk around the school going into different classrooms and explore the new building.

We also do Jimmy's washing from First Aid like washing the ice pack covers, the bed sheets and the towels. We also walk to the post office in Bundoora and we get the mail for Concord school and hand it in to the front office.

FIT FOR LIFE

On Wednesdays 9/10 students go to fit for life in the morning for the first two sessions. I go bowling with Elise. We meet up with her outside the cafe around 9:10am, where we all split off into our different groups. Once everyone is together we walk down the road to Oz Tenpin Bowling. Once we get there we get split into different lanes in groups of 4 and begin the game. At the start of the term I was getting 60 points. Now I'm averaging 90 points per game. My skills are improving each week. Overall I enjoyed bowling for fit for life this term because it is a bit challenging but I like pushing myself to be the best that I can be.
