Auslan Report

Welcome to Term 3, Auslan! During this fortnight, Students will cover the topics: Deaf Culture, Feelings, Greetings and Questions and Things Around the House. When learning about Deaf Culture, students will understand how deaf people use Auslan to communicate including what is important to them. Students will focus on what to do when meeting with a deaf person by practising making eye contact, smiling and greeting.

Students will learn about Feelings and how to express this using signing and facial expressions. The words they will learn to sign are: proud, silly, love, calm, excited, scared, sad, happy, bored, sick, nervous, angry, surprised, shy, safe, tired and brave. By practising signing these words, students will be able to connect and express their own feelings along with learning the Feelings song.

In the Greetings and Questions lesson, students will focus on greeting others by signing “Hello, how are you?” and responding to the question by signing ‘Good’, ‘bad’ or ‘ok’. Students will also be asked in Auslan “Name what?” which translates to ‘What is your name?’ Students will respond to this question by finger spelling their names. Signs taught in this lesson will include: hello, goodbye, good morning, good afternoon, my name is .., good to see you, haven’t seen you in a long time, what’s your name? Is your day good? Ready to learn? How do you feel today? Good to meet you.

Students will also learn to sign words for things around the house. The signs taught include:  house, home, window, door, stairs, lounge room, TV, couch, kitchen, microwave, oven, cupboard, fridge, drawers and dining room. Students will learn to recognise these signs and practise their understanding through games and learning a poem.

As our students build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students! Please scan the QR Code below which will provide you with YouTube videos to assist in practising together at home.
