Year 7s Visit Ancient Rome

At the start of Term 3, our Year 7 students participated in an interactive incursion for their study of Ancient Rome. Long-time visitors History Up Close brought our students a hands-on experience for what life would have been like for Ancient Romans.

The students began the day with some opportunities to dress up in clothing representing different aspects of Roman society: soldiers, wealthy patricians, lower-class plebeians and even the Emperor and Empress. Our students followed this up with what is always the highlight of the day – competing in the gladiatorial games. These Year 7 students get the chance to act as either a retiarius or a murmillo and compete to the (pretend) death in combat! Two students fight until a winner is declared and then our amazing audience, quite loudly, declares whether the loser shall meet their ultimate demise or not. Of course, the Emperor can choose however they want but you never want to upset your audience too much!
