Philosothon 2024

Deep thinking and open mindedness were at the forefront for philosophy students from Years 10, 11, and 12. Students joined together to reflect on some of the big ideas around what it means to live a good life in our modern world.

Dr Chris McCaw from The University of Melbourne spoke to students about the role that technology plays in our education now and what might change into the future. Students thought about the ethics of generative AI in the classroom and beyond. It was also fascinating to see firm opinions on what percentage of parenting it would be appropriate to outsource to AI.

Students from across the year levels engaged in rigourous discussions about the role of charitable giving too. Hu Pennington from The Life You Can Save came to speak about the ethics of donations and measuring the impact of charities. Philosophy students considered deeply the Peter Singer thought experiment and the possibilities of effective altruism. The session closed with students making a decision about where best to donate their $10 offered to them by the speaker.

Senior students working together on thorny issues really lived out our school value of curiosity and the questions posed showed how thoughtful our classes are.
