As we reach the midpoint of the hockey season, it is great to reflect on the achievements and progress of our Hockey teams. This year has demonstrated strength in Kinross Wolaroi Hockey, with 11 teams representing us in the Orange Hockey competitions, each demonstrating tremendous dedication and skill.
In the Junior competition, our U14 KWS Blue and U16 KWS Royal teams have shown strong form, placing themselves firmly in contention for the finals. Their hard work on the field, coupled with the guidance of our coaching staff, has paid off with some impressive victories. As we head into the second half of the season, we look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of all teams.
Our U18 teams have also had their share of victories, positioning themselves well as the season progresses. With strategic play and determination, all three teams have secured wins that set a promising tone for the remainder of the competition. Their commitment to improving their skills and teamwork is commendable.
The KWS 1sts team, under the expert leadership of Coach Mrs Hayley Lyons, has set a remarkable pace this season. Their hard work and cohesive teamwork have propelled them to the top of the 1st Grade Women’s Competition. Currently sitting in first place is a testament to their dedication and skill on the field. We eagerly anticipate their continued success as they strive for further success in the season.
Representative Hockey
In Term 2, several of our talented players were selected to represent the WAS Hockey teams at the AICES Championships. This prestigious opportunity showcases the calibre of hockey talent we have at KWS:
U15 Girls: Paxton Buckerfield, Abbie Lyons, Phoebe Lyons, Chloe Provost, Clare Wood
Open Girls: Phoebe Hunter, Sophie Luelf, Lucy Reidy, Bianca Wong, Tessa Wong, Zoe Wood
Open Boys: Rhys Jones, Charlie Swift, Archie Roberts, Lachlan Watts
These students have demonstrated not only exceptional skill but also a strong commitment to their sport. Congratulations to Paxton Buckerfield, Abbie Lyons, Phoebe Lyons (U15 and Opens), and Chloe Provost for their selection to represent AICES at the CIS Championships—an outstanding achievement that reflects their hard work and dedication.
As we look ahead to the remainder of the season, we encourage all our players to continue striving for excellence both on and off the field. The passion and determination you show are what make our hockey program set for continued development, and we are excited to see what the future holds for each of our teams.
Phoebe Lyons NSW U14 Selection
Phoebe Lyons has been selected in the NSW U14 hockey team and will compete in the U14 National Championships set to be played in Perth, WA from 29 September to 5 October. This is reflective of the hard work and dedication she demonstrates in training and games.
Deb Orrock - Australian Masters 2025 Selection
We are lucky enough to have some great coaches as part of the Kinross Wolaroi Hockey community and I just wanted to highlight one coach in particular: Aunty Deb Orrock.
In 2023, Aunty Deb (Stuart Douglas House and U14 Blue Hockey Coach) was selected in the Australian Masters team to compete in the Australian World Cup Masters in Auckland in November this year. This year, after her performance in the National Masters held earlier in July, she has been selected in the Australian Masters Squad for the 2025 Trans-Tasman Challenge which will be held on the Gold Coast next year.
At this tournament, Deb was awarded a badge in recognition for her 20 years of selection in NSW teams and 9 years of selection in Australian teams. Deb also won the Dale Hodges award (see photo below), given to someone who exhibits integrity, strength, team commitment and upholds the NSW Women's Masters' Ethos. This is an amazing achievement, and we are lucky enough to have Aunty Deb coaching our U14 Blue Hockey team where she is sharing her expertise, passion, and knowledge with our young hockey members.
Mrs Jane Crellen - MIC Hockey
During the recent school holiday period, 47 students and 6 staff embarked on a Rugby tour to Japan. We spent ten days in a very hot and humid Japanese Summer where our students experienced so much that Japan has to offer. Our students were treated to amazing food, onsens, a Japanese school visit, a karaoke night, Day 1 of the National Sumo Championships, tours of castles and shrines, the world famous Shibuya Crossing and lots of shopping. Take a look at the gallery below for just a selection of images from this amazing tour.
On the Rugby front our students played six games, all in the oppressive heat. All were played on artificial turf which was a new experience for our students. We won one game and had five narrow losses. Many lessons were learned during the games which will hold us in good stead for the ISA Competition and the girls' Chloe Dalton Cup competition.
Last Saturday saw us host our first ISA fixture. Our Opens girls were due to play on Main but unfortunately the visiting team pulled out on Friday night. Thankfully they still sent the U16 team, so our girls played between the 1st XV and 2nd XV. This was one of the highlights of the day with our girls taking out a huge win. We look forward to all our girls teams starting their competition this Saturday.
It was a tough day on the field for our boys against a much bigger school. As usual, our boys had a genuine crack all day but most results didn't go our way. A special mention to our U15A's who got the win. Our results from the day are attached. Whilst we should never be happy with a loss, comparing our scores from last year to this year, significant improvement has occurred. Our boys are definitely narrowing the gap.
Good Luck to all students in all sports this week.
