Bill Crawford Lodge Visit

Each Wednesday, the Junior classes have taken it in turns to visit the residents of Bill Crawford Lodge. This excursion provides students with an authentic opportunity to apply literacy, oral language and interpersonal skills in a real-world setting.  We sing songs, read some books and engage in conversations with the aged care residents.  It has been wonderful to see students develop confidence as communicators, build empathy and contribute positively to their local community.  Thank you to our parent helpers who helped us.

Scientific Investigations

Last week the 2/3/4s continued their scientific investigations into rocks and minerals. They tok on the role of geologists to investigate the rocks (rock cakes) that their teachers had made. They recognised that the rocks were the entirety of the object and they cut up and looked more deeply into what minerals (ingredients) may have made up the rocks. They chose 3 minerals to focus on and recorded comments on the colour, hardness, shape and ther observable features.

Foundation Fire Ed:

Over the past two Tuesdays, our Foundation students have been fortunate to have an incursion with some firefighters.

Session 1 focused on emergency services personnel, ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fires, what to do in a fire: crawl down low and go go go, to call triple 000 in an emergency and identifying safe meeting place.

Session 2 was a highlight, with each child having a go at using the fire hose. We also reviewed our safe meeting places (a big thank you to families who supported their child at home to complete this sheet) and got a photo in front of the fire truck.

At the end of the session students also got to take home an activity book and a fire truck pop out to have a go at constructing.

We are incredibly grateful to have this program within Victoria and to the local fire brigade for taking time out of their very busy day to come and share with us!

Sports Report

Congratulations to all students who competed in the Eureka Athletics last Friday on the 7th of August. 40 students from grades 4/5/6 traveled by bus to Llanberris Athletics track to take part in a range of track and field events throughout the day. Ballarat turned on the weather with a bit of sun shining through, making for perfect conditions for our students to compete in. Students represented the school with pride by competing hard and showing our school values when watching and cheering for other competitors. Thank you to all the parents and families for coming along to support. I know the students appreciate all you do for them.

Congratulations to the students who have made it through to the GWR Athletics which will be held on Wednesday the 9th of September. We know you will work hard and represent the school well.

Special thank you to Leon Underwood and Sean Tehan for offering their time to assist with the running of both the 100m and 200m sprints. Your assistance on the day was greatly appreciated by the Athletics Coordinators.
