Grade 2 News

Welcome to Term 3. We hope all of our Grade 2 families had an enjoyable and restful holiday break. Students have settled back into classroom routines well and have made a positive start to the term. It has been pleasing to see them reconnect with their classmates and approach their learning with focus and confidence. 

The Premier's Reading Challenge is continuing this term, and we encourage students to keep reading and logging the books they have completed. The challenge closes on Friday 5 September, so there is still plenty of time to work towards their reading goal. Thank you for your ongoing support with home reading and for helping to foster positive reading habits. 

Our recent Parent-Teacher Conferences provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate students' learning and discuss their progress and goals for the remainder of the year. We appreciate the ongoing partnership between home and school and look forward to continuing to work together to support each student's learning throughout the term. 

Maths: Multiplicative Thinking

This term, students are exploring multiplicative thinking and developing their understanding of multiplication and division. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students are investigating equal groups, repeated addition and arrays to build connections between different ways of representing multiplication. They are also practising skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to recognise number patterns and develop efficient strategies for solving problems.

Students are learning to use arrays, drawings and materials to represent multiplication and division situations. They are exploring how equal groups can be shared and described in different ways, and are developing their ability to explain their thinking using mathematical language and representations.

It has been wonderful to see students building confidence as they explore these concepts, identify patterns and apply their understanding to solve a range of mathematical problems.

English: 

This term, students have been exploring the text The Grumpy Lighthouse Keeper. In this story, some cheeky sea animals sneak into the lighthouse keeper’s bed while he is out braving a storm, creating an engaging setting for students to explore characters, events and the importance of lighthouses.

Students have been focusing on improving their sentences by using conjunctions to connect ideas, adjectives to add description and synonyms to expand their vocabulary. They have been practising ways to make their writing more detailed and engaging for their readers, while making thoughtful choices about the words they use. Students have been enjoying experimenting with new vocabulary and adding detail to their writing to help bring their ideas and characters to life.

Humanities: Uluru and the Anangu People

This term, students have been learning about Uluru and the Anangu people, the Traditional Owners of the land where Uluru is located. Students have been exploring Uluru’s location, geology and unique features, developing their understanding of why this place is significant and special.

Students have been considering why Uluru needs to be protected and learning about its deep Aboriginal history and cultural importance. They have been developing their vocabulary by exploring new terms such as monolith and arkose, the type of rock that forms Uluru. Students have also created persuasive posters to share why Uluru is an important place and encourage others to respect and protect it.

During NAIDOC Week, students also created posters to share their learning about the Aboriginal language word Bullarto Dumbalk (Plenty Cold) and its significance. It was wonderful to see students sharing their knowledge and creativity, with a big congratulations to Daria (2B) for being selected as the Grade 2 winner for her poster displayed below.

Reminders

Please remember to send your child's home reading satchel and diary to school each day. We encourage students to read regularly at home and record their reading in their diary so we can celebrate their efforts and progress together. Consistent home reading helps develop fluency, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.

This term library days have changed for some classes. Please ensure library books come to school on these days so they can be returned.

Attendance:

This year, Wimba has introduced Wally the Wallaby, our class attendance mascot! Each week, Wally is awarded to the class with the highest attendance as we celebrate the importance of coming to school every day.

Regular attendance helps students build strong learning habits, develop friendships, and stay connected with classroom learning. We encourage all students to attend school every day unless they are unwell or there is an unavoidable reason to be absent.

Students who achieve 100% attendance for the term will also be entered into a draw for the chance to win an amazing prize.
