RMIT School of Fashion – Visible Mending Workshop

RMIT School of Fashion – Visible Mending Workshop
On Friday, October 31, Year 9 Textiles students visited the RMIT School of Fashion and Textiles in Brunswick. After an early train and bus ride, we arrived eager to explore RMIT and learn new skills for the upcoming Slow Festival workshops.
Lecturers Deborah Ives and Emma Lynas spoke about sustainable fashion and community approaches to reducing waste. We then learned Sashiko, a traditional Japanese visible mending technique that uses simple running stitches to turn damaged fabric into a decorative feature. Using our old jeans, we patched and experimented with different designs—many finishing their first projects within an hour.
We also met Jess, an RMIT Fashion Design graduate, who shared her stunning upcycled collection and spoke about her journey into the course. A campus tour followed, showcasing RMIT’s impressive facilities and resources.
A huge thank you to Ms. Rachael Bor, Miss Natalie Conti, Mr. Caleb Azeez, and Mr. David Creed for organising and supporting us. We’re so grateful to RMIT for the chance to learn new techniques, meet inspiring creatives, and experience university life.
