It’s been wonderful to see the 5/6 students settle back into routine after an exciting week away at camp. The classrooms are once again buzzing with focus, teamwork, and plenty of laughter. Students have also begun rehearsing for the Year 6 Graduation Dance, showing great enthusiasm and energy as they learn their moves. We’re looking forward to seeing their confidence grow with each practice and can’t wait to celebrate their efforts at graduation later this term.

As the weather warms up, please remember our “No Hat, No Play” rule — students must wear a school hat when outdoors. We also encourage everyone to bring a clearly labelled drink bottle each day to stay hydrated.

Reading

In Reading, students have been exploring different strategies to help them become more thoughtful and confident readers. We are learning to consider the purpose of a text and think about why an author has written it, to entertain, inform, or persuade. Students are also practising how to summarise a book they have read, identifying the most important ideas and retelling them in their own words.

Recently, our focus has been on visualisation creating mental images while we read. Students have learned what a visualisation is, why we make them, and how this strategy can help us understand and enjoy stories on a deeper level. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity shine as they describe and illustrate the images that form in their minds while reading.

Writing

In Writing, students have been developing their informative and creative writing skills through a variety of engaging tasks. We are learning to write an informative paragraph about endangered animals using the TEEAL structure (Topic sentence, Explanation, Evidence, Analysis, Link). This structure helps students organise their ideas clearly and support their information with facts and examples.

Students have also been challenged to creatively respond to a stimulus by writing in a genre of their choice, such as a narrative, poem, or diary entry. This task encourages imagination, voice, and independent thinking while allowing students to apply the writing techniques they’ve been learning throughout the year.

It’s been fantastic to see students experimenting with new ideas, building their confidence, and taking pride in their published pieces.
