Grade 1/2 Area

Ms. Emily Giliam, Miss Stella Baker Campbell, Miss Katherine Lyon,  Mrs Sarah Castellas and Mrs Sue Ritson

The students of grade one 2 have been busy learning about living things through their discovery lessons. Fractions has been a focus in Mathematics for the past few weeks, so please encourage your child to identify half in their everyday lives. Eg Half a sandwich, half a glass, half of a collection.

We have investigated fractions by making 2 equal parts, (halving) then halving again to make 4 equal parts (quarters or fourths) and finally halving again to make 8 equal parts. (eighths) Students enjoyed using circles, squares and rectangles to show their understanding of  1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 of a whole. We also looked at making half of a collection using counters.   If your child enjoys cooking, please encourage them to develop their understanding of fractions, by practicing measuring out half a cup of flour or a 1/4 cup of  water.

During Writing sessions, we have been following the writing process of planning, composing, revising, editing and publishing. We are learning to be more creative when publishing our stories to include colourful headings that stand out and pictures that relate to our setting, character of problem.  Here are some of the finished publications.

We also celebrated Halloween and enjoyed some Remarkable Writing related to Halloween. It was wonderful to see so many students dress up and remember to bring their gold coin donation. The students of 1/2C made a great effort to dress up and there was even a hungry dinosaur who was trying to eat a witch!!
