Year 11 Business Management

YEAR 11 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
As part of our Year 11 Business Management course, students from both classes have been studying ‘social enterprise organisations’ – businesses that are not established for profit, but rather to meet community needs and provide vital support. This year, we chose to focus on the Geelong Foodshare (Geelong Food Relief Centre), a local non-for-profit organisation that provides food and support to individuals and families experiencing hardship. To enhance their understanding of how social enterprises operate and contribute to society, students visited the centre to learn about its operations and values. During the visit, students participated in volunteer activities to support the centre’s community work and gain hands-on experience of how a social enterprise functions in the real world. We are proud to continue developing our partnership with the centre as part of the Business Management Program and look forward to seeing our students grow through this meaningful learning experience. During Term 4, students will work in small teams to design and run their own small business ventures as part of our annual Business Management Market Day, held at lunchtime at school. All profits generated from these student-led businesses will be donated to the Geelong Foodshare Centre to support individuals and families in our local areas.
(Michael Caccamo & Rosetta Pugh – Year 11 Business Management Teachers)
“In our Business Management class, we have learnt about different types of business structures such as not-for-profit organisations. Geelong Foodshare is a specific example of a business that operates with a main business objective to provide for those in need, instead of gaining a profit. Additionally, we have looked over many aspects of business operations such as maintaining a corporate socially responsible company. This includes minimising any waste and ensuring the business has a positive impact on the environment and society. Geelong Foodshare provides meals and food to those who may be unable to access these resources, allowing them to have a beneficial effect on society.” (Elly Wilde 11 Mango)
“I found this experience really rewarding as I knew I was making a difference and helping those people that are struggling and don’t have access to food”. (Asha Smith 11 Blue)
“We sorted through large crates of donated vegetables. We chose the good quality ones and the others went into compost bins. After that we packed pumpkins into smaller crates. (Marco Sioulas 11 Purple)
“At Geelong Foodshare, we worked as a team in order to sort through donated foods such as meat packs, vegetables and fruits, and placed them into appropriate storage boxes to be distributed or sold in the onsite supermarket”. (Jack Burton 11 Ebony)
“It was nothing like I expected. I expected it to be very boring and not very interesting. However, it was a really enjoyable experience and I am considering volunteering there again. (Matilda Kelly 11 Ebony)
“I learned how Geelong Foodshare helps disadvantaged people to have food to eat, and how they operate this business despite it being a non-profit organisation, through community donations and volunteer workers.” (Hamish McCracken 11 Mango )
“This experience made me feel happy because the food items were going to less fortunate people in our community who struggle to buy food every day. That day I enquired on how I could apply to be a volunteer in the future to continue to organise food for people in need. (Rhenzo Lastimosa 11 Gold)
