The Year 1 Classes have listened to Edvard Grieg’s composition, ‘Morning’ which he wrote in 1875. This melodic piece of music describes how Edvard loved to lie in the green grass and daydream in the mountainous country of Norway where he grew up.

Students drew their reflections while listening to this wonderous melody.

I was fortunate to attend the Year One excursion to see the Melbourne Orchestra on Friday 10th October. The students showed their knowledge of the music families by identifying instruments such as the violin, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, oboe (playing the sweet sound of Swan Lake), trumpet, trombone, French horn, and timpani drums. Impressive work Year Ones!+

The Year 2 students have learnt about the ‘Toy Symphony’ by Franz Haydn composed in 1760. Students learnt that at the young age of 8, Hadyn was selected to sing in a choir in Vienna which led him to attend boarding school until he was 17 years old. This composition reminds Haydn of the toys which were so much a part of his childhood and students studied which percussion instruments create childish sounds which were important to Haydn growing up. Their favourite one was the Kazoo!

Students completed an instrument sort to show their understanding of the instruments featured in this symphony.

The Year 3’s have impressed me with their knowledge of the different time signatures.

They listened to a whole range of music genres and were able to name the correct count for each! From ‘Staying Alive’ by the Bee Gees, ‘Mull of Kintyre’ by Paul McCartney, ‘Zorba the Greek Dance’ to ‘Hey Ya’ by Outcast and ‘One Love’ by Bob Marley.

Next, we will complete this activity to consolidate rhythm knowledge.
