Grade 6 News

As we enter the final term of primary school, there’s a sense of excitement and celebration in the air for our Year 6 students.
This term promises to be a memorable one, filled with fun, reflection, and meaningful moments as we prepare to farewell our graduating class.
We’re looking forward to a range of special events, including graduation preparations and final day celebrations, which will give students the opportunity to reflect on their primary school journey and celebrate their achievements with peers, teachers, and families.
Year 6 Literacy Focus: Fantasy Writing Inspired by Nevermoor
This term, our Year 6 students are embarking on an exciting literary journey through Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Australian author Jessica Townsend. This richly imaginative novel introduces readers to Morrigan, a young girl who escapes a mysterious curse and finds herself in the magical world of Nevermoor, where she must face a series of extraordinary trials to earn her place in the Wundrous Society.
As we explore the novel, students will be developing their narrative writing skills with a strong focus on writing for a specific audience. They’ll be learning how to craft compelling fantasy stories—building imaginative worlds, creating vivid characters, and using descriptive language to engage readers. This unit will also support students in understanding narrative structure, pacing, and the power of voice in storytelling.
We’re looking forward to seeing the creativity and confidence grow in our young writers as they draw inspiration from Morrigan’s magical adventures!
Mathematics Focus: Location and Transformation
In our upcoming Mathematics unit, Year 6 students will be exploring the concepts of location and transformation, aligned with the Victorian Curriculum. This unit will involve using coordinates to describe positions on a grid, interpreting and creating maps, and applying transformations such as translations, reflections, rotations, and enlargements to shapes.
Students will develop spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills as they investigate how objects move and change position in space. These concepts will be explored through hands-on activities, digital tools, and real-world applications to make learning both engaging and meaningful.
