Friends are like Flowers

What happens if we focus on just ONE friend? Help your child see the value of growing many friendships!

Key Outcome

Your child will learn the importance of nurturing many friendships.

Instructions

  1. Say to your child, “Have you heard the quote: Friends are like flowers in the garden of life!?
  2. Ask them, “Can you think of ways that friends are like flowers?” Get them to share some ideas. They might say:
    • Like flowers, friends make our world beautiful.
    • Like flowers, some friends are there all year round – whereas some friends are only around for a season.
    • Like flowers, some require a lot of attention to grow – whereas some are low maintenance.
  3. Say to them, “I want you to watch this video with Tyson (and his silly puppet, Oscar) who have an important lesson for you about how friends are like flowers!”
  4. Click on the image below to play the video.
  5. Get your child to reflect afterwards. Ask them, “What Friendship Fact did you think of when Tyson was teaching this lesson?” Get them to make the connection to Friendship Fact #2: Every friendship is different.
  6. Reiterate the importance of having lots of different types of friends at school and not putting ‘all their eggs in one basket’.
