Why We Love Picture Books (and Why Our Library Has So Many!)

At our library, we’re big fans of picture books, and it’s not just because they’re colourful and fun! Picture books are excellent tools for learning, imagination, and connection, and we love sharing them with students of all ages.

Animals Everywhere!

It’s no surprise that so many picture books have animals as the stars! Children love animal characters because animal stories leave out human differences. Whether they’re heroes, tricksters, or best friends, animal characters make every story a little more magical.

Hidden Treasures on Every Page

Picture books aren’t just short stories; they’re little worlds packed with meaning! Every word and illustration counts. On the surface, there is a short story, but look closer and discover the deeper emotional or educational message. Take your time on each page, explore the illustrations, and you’ll find bonus details that make reading extra fun.

Reading a picture book can be a real adventure for you and your child, by asking questions like

• Why do you think these colours were chosen?

• What do you think the characters feel?

• Guess what might happen next in the story.

Asking questions while reading a book to your child makes the reading experience exciting, fun, and full of surprises for both you and them.
