Level Six

Level 6 Cooking at Doncaster Secondary College

This term, the Level 6 students had the opportunity to participate in a cooking class at Doncaster Secondary College, run by their classroom teacher. The students had recipes to follow and for many, it was their first time cooking in an industrial kitchen. Students learnt how to bake chocolate chip muffins, and cook Greek keftedes (meatballs) with a Greek salad and tzatziki. Safety in the kitchen was a huge focus as students had strict rules they needed to follow which included washing hands, being careful with knives and hot pans, and using ovens and stoves correctly. All Level 6 students that participated were fantastic and listened well to their teachers. The students should be extremely proud of themselves for a successful day! A huge thank you to Joan for helping each class in the kitchen, and to the DSC staff for allowing us to use their Food Technology kitchens!

Student voice

Cooking was one of the best highlights and experiences of the year! We made delicious food and I even made the muffins at home as I enjoyed them so much. As I am going to DSC next year, it was great to go to the high school again to prepare myself for next year.

I liked how we got to walk to DSC and my highlight was getting to use all the new equipment in the kitchens that we might not usually use at home.

We had a delightful experience cooking at DSC. I had a lot of fun making the food and put a lot of effort into it. My partner Avash and I had great teamwork and were speedy cooks, and overall our muffins were delicious!

During cooking we got to make delicious food, make fun memories with our friends and learn how to be safe in the kitchen while also having fun. We got to make chocolate chip muffins and Greek meatballs with salad. I even passed on the recipes to my grandparents so they can try it!

For cooking we walked to DSC and made Keftedes and tzatziki with pita and Greek salad. Cooking was a great experience and taught me how to cut ingredients and fry the meatballs. At recess and lunch we got to hang out in the DSC yard and eat our muffins and meatballs! It was a fun experience that I am looking forward to doing again in Year 7!

Literacy

This term in Literacy, students have been exploring and creating high-quality procedural texts. We have analysed real-world examples such as HelloFresh recipes, IKEA instruction manuals, and various “how to” guides to understand what makes them effective. Our focus has been on the use of imperative verbs, clear layout and presentation, and ensuring that instructions are accessible and easy to follow.

Students have been developing their ability to write step-by-step instructions that are precise, engaging, and well-organised, using visuals and formatting to support clarity. Through this process, they have gained a deeper understanding of how purpose, audience, and design work together to communicate information effectively.

Numeracy

In Numeracy this term, students explored a range of real-world concepts involving money, graphs, and integers. Throughout the unit, they learned how mathematics connects to everyday decision-making and problem-solving.

Students developed their understanding of integers by placing them on number lines and exploring their properties. They also learned how to plot and interpret coordinates on Cartesian planes, using these skills to represent data visually. We investigated profit and loss, learning how to graph and analyse financial trends to make informed conclusions.

To apply these skills, students planned and created their own event scenarios, exploring the cause and effect of having cheap versus expensive ticket prices. This hands-on task encouraged them to think critically about budgeting, pricing, and how mathematical decisions can influence real outcomes.
