Level Five

We have had an exciting start to the Term in Level Five with our Dance Curriculum Program, a visit to Doncaster Secondary College to watch "A Fractured Fairytale", and beginning our Shark Tank projects in the classroom.
Next week we also have a busy schedule with our Swimming Safety Program in Port Melbourne, Remembrance Day, and an Incursion with John from Radio Awareness for Kids.
Reading
This term, students have continued to develop their comprehension skills through explicit vocabulary instruction using a Frayer Model as well as a focus on several key reading strategies. These include Predicting, Visualising, and Self-Monitoring—specifically Checking for Understanding and Backing Up and Rereading. Each strategy has helped students deepen their understanding of texts, build meaning as they read, and strengthen their overall reading fluency and comprehension.
Writing
This term in Writing, students explored a variety of engaging text types that strengthened their creativity and communication skills. They began with persuasive writing, learning how to structure convincing arguments using strong reasons, emotive language, and clear evidence. Students then collaborated to create team posters linked to our Term 4 theme, focusing on effective presentation skills, layout, and visual appeal to communicate their ideas clearly. To finish the term, students delved into script writing, developing their understanding of dialogue, stage directions, and characterisation as they brought their stories to life through short scenes and performances. Overall, Term 4 allowed students to express themselves for different purposes and audiences while building confidence as thoughtful, expressive writers.
Maths
This term in Year 5 Maths, we explored area, volume, and capacity, learning to calculate and compare measurements and apply them in real-life projects. We deepened our understanding of fractions, recognising and simplifying equivalent fractions, converting between improper and mixed numbers, and adding or subtracting with unlike denominators. We also linked fractions, decimals, and percentages, learning to convert between them and solve problems involving money, discounts, and everyday contexts. Through these topics, students strengthened their number sense, problem-solving, and ability to apply mathematical reasoning to practical situations.
Theme
Our Theme unit this term revolves around Economics, Marketing and Product Design. Students are working in groups to design a product, conduct market research, build a prototype and design advertising (including an ad for the radio). Their final assessment will be in the style of the TV show Shark Tank where they present to a panel of "sharks" and answer questions about their product. The students are very excited to build their prototypes and face the sharks!
