Term 4
Welcome to our final term for 2025. We hope you all had a safe and restful holiday break. We look forward to working with parents and families once again. As we head into these last few months, there is much to look forward to — from exciting learning opportunities to special end-of-year events. Let’s make this term a memorable one together!
This term in Literacy, the Grade 1 students have been diving into the wonderful world of verbs and learning all about the suffix "-ed" – which helps us show that something has already happened.
Another key spelling rule we’ve focused on is our new classroom favourite:FLoSS words !
"If the word is short and the vowel is short, double the end and don’t get caught!"(e.g. bell, fuss, off )
It’s been wonderful to see them spotting patterns and applying the rule in their own writing.
In addition to our grammar work, we’ve spent time consolidating our understanding of narrative texts where students are exploring character development, setting, plot, detail and problem-solving within stories. We're encouraging imaginative thinking while also reinforcing writing elements, such as clear sentence structure and correct punctuation. We continue to look closely at the structure and planning of an engaging story for our reader. Students have completed some excellent narrative planners.
Grade 2s started the term with writing a recount about their term 3 holidays and are now moving on to some revision of narrative writing. Students are enjoying planning their stories using a story mountain and then writing, often in the form of a response to a story we have read or writing part 2 of a story. It is great to see our students imaginations blooming with creative ideas and the development in their writing, grammar and spelling from the beginning of the year.
It’s been a fun and productive few weeks in Literacy so far, and we’re excited to see how the students continue to grow as confident writers and readers.
Term 4 is off to a fantastic start in Grade 1 as our young learners have enthusiastically embraced some fun mathematical concepts! This term already, students have been consolidating the world of data collection and presentation, and it has been a joy to see them actively involved in gathering, organising, and displaying information in creative and meaningful ways.
Through hands-on activities and group discussions, the children have been revising how to represent data using bar graphs, line charts, and even simple pie charts. Whether surveying their classmates on favourite fruits, heroes, hobbies, foods, texts, or weekend activities, the children depicted great enthusiasm and teamwork in compiling their results and turning numbers into visual stories.
In addition to their data work, our Grade 1 students have also been revising division strategies introduced earlier in the year. With growing confidence, they are revising sharing methods to solve problems in practical contexts.
Grade 2s have been revising time, focussing on telling time to quarter past and quarter to the hour in both digital time and analogue time. In conjuction with this we have started learning about fractions, looking at how our clock can be divided in halves and quarters and then moving on to smaller fractions of shapes and collections. Students have enjoyed lots of hands on activities and games to reinforce their learning.
We are incredibly proud of how engaged and curious the students have been so far this term.
Last Wednesday we embarked on our long awaited community walk to the Warrandyte Library. After a false start last term when we had to postpone our plans due to rainy weather, we were very excited to have the most beautiful sunny day for our walk.
With the help of some lovely parent helpers, we left school after recess and walked along Yarra St with friendly waves from friends including our local CFA along the way.
When we arrived at the library we were greeted by our lovely Youth services officer, Candice who explained to us how important the library is to our community. Our local libraries provide a safe space where people can work, study, read or play games. The library is warm in winter and cool in summer and best of all it is a free service!
Candice taught us some new songs, read us some stories about communities and will be preparing our new library memberships over the coming weeks - look out for them in the mail. Back at school we will be writing some thank you cards to send to Candice to thank her for having us.
In TRP this week, the Grade 1 and 2 students explored practical ways to help others. We unpacked ways we could look for opportunities to be there for others and reflected on how doing things for others is powerful in changing our moods.
Did you know?
Helping others is a way to show and respond with empathy.
Helping others benefits both the ‘giver’ and ‘receiver’.
Being helpful and empathetic makes our world a happier place for everyone.
Helping and being kind are positive qualities in ourselves and others. They make our classroom, homes and communities happy and caring places to be.
