Foundation (Prep)

Welcome to Term 4!
I hope everyone had a nice time over the school holiday break. It was certainly well-timed after our swimming program last term. The students have returned refreshed and ready to go for Term 4. This week we have welcomed Mrs Pierce to Prep C. She is completing a teaching placement as a part of her course at Victoria University and is enjoying her time with our prep students.
English
Over the first two weeks of term, the prep students have continued to follow our InitiaLit program. Now that we are in Term 4, we are covering new digraphs (two letters that make one sound) and we have now introduced: 'wh', 'th' and 'oo' as in moon.
We have talked about the beginning, middle and end of a story and practised recalling the main events. Students worked together to recall the beginning, middle and end of the Three Little Pigs.
Maths
In Maths, we have been consolidating concepts already introduced this year. Students have revisited counting strategies which help them to work more efficiently and accurately. They have practised exploring the different combinations that make ten (8 and 2, 7 and 3, 5 and 5, etc) and looked at maths problems which involved sharing into equal groups.
The students use a variety of methods to apply their learning including games, worksheets and whiteboards.
Community Walk
The prep-2 classes have continued to tie in the focus on Community in their inquiry units this year. This week the three grades enjoyed their walk together to the Warrandyte Library. It was a big walk for the prep children so I was very impressed with their resilience when some started to tire walking back to school.
Candice shared some picture story books with us and talked about the community library as a place for people to come and enjoy a safe, quiet space with family and friends. Many of our students have applied for a membership card which they can look forward to receiving in the mail.
We have lots more to look forward to this term. Please mark the following dates in your calendar and have a lovely weekend.
