Teaching and Learning

Mrs Peta Phillips - Assistant Principal

Dear Karoo Community,

What a wonderful start we’ve had to Term 4 at Karoo Primary School! This term is always an exciting one, as it offers a chance to reflect on our students’ learning journeys, celebrate the fantastic experiences we’ve shared, and look ahead to the opportunities the future holds.

At Karoo Primary School, we take great care and pride in ensuring that all our students are actively involved in our planning and are provided with the best opportunities to thrive. This term, I’d like to share some information about transitions—a process we value highly as we support our students and families through times of change.

What are transitions?

Transitions are simply periods of change—times when we adapt to new circumstances, expectations, people, environments, or routines. They are a natural and significant part of every child’s and young person’s life, both in school and at home. Transitions might include moving from one class to another, changing schools, or even events like moving house or welcoming a new sibling.

The impact of transitions

Transition is more than just the first day in a new setting—it’s a process that unfolds over time. Preparation often begins months in advance, as families and educators work together to help children feel ready and confident in their new environment.

During these transitions, children and young people experience a variety of changes, including:

  • Physical environments: new classrooms, buildings, or outdoor spaces
  • Rules and routines: more structured times and expectations
  • Relationships: meeting new teachers and classmates, and adjusting to new social dynamics
  • Learning experiences: greater independence, new challenges, and new ways of learning

Why transitions matter

Research shows that transitions can bring both excitement and challenge. While many students look forward to new experiences and friendships, others may feel nervous or uncertain. Every child’s experience is unique—some adapt quickly, while others take more time to feel settled.

When children experience a positive transition, they are more likely to:

  • Feel comfortable, valued, and secure
  • Be motivated and excited to learn
  • Build strong relationships with peers and teachers
  • Develop a genuine sense of belonging within their school community

At Karoo Primary School, we believe that a thoughtful, well-planned transition process makes a real difference to students’ learning, wellbeing, and overall school experience. Throughout this term, students will have many opportunities to explore new learning spaces, meet new teachers, and prepare for the next steps in their educational journey.

As we continue through Term 4, I encourage you to keep an eye on Compass, our school website, and future newsletters for updates about transition activities and events. Together, we can ensure that every student enjoys a smooth, happy, and successful transition.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing you around our amazing school.

Warm regards,

Peta Phillips
