LOTE (Mandarin)

Ms Wenxi Jiang

In the first three weeks of Mandarin this term, our students have been learning all about the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节 /Zhōngqiū Jié) — one of the most important traditional celebrations in Chinese culture.

In the first week, we explored the customs of the festival — what people do, eat, and how they celebrate with family and friends. Students learned about mooncakes, lanterns, and how families gather together to admire the full moon.

During the second and third weeks, we dived deeper into the legend of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, and discovered how people in different countries celebrate the festival in their own special ways. Students enjoyed comparing the foods, traditions, and celebrations around the world.

To finish off our unit, we made our own mooncakes out of clay or playdough — a fun, hands-on way to connect with the festival and express our creativity.

It has been a wonderful start to the term, full of stories, imagination, and cultural discovery! 🌕✨

🌕 Take-Home Tip:

Ask your child to draw or tell you their favourite part of the Mid-Autumn Festival — was it the story, the food, or the moon? Encourage them to use a few Chinese words they remember, such as 月亮 (yuè liang – moon) or 月饼 (yuè bǐng – mooncake) when they share!

Warm regards,

Ms Jiang
