On Wednesday 10th September a group of 30 Year 9 & 10 high ability students attended “A Viral Enigma” at Quantum Victoria.  Teams of high ability students raced against the clock to collect data from remote sites as a global pandemic threatens humanity!

Students investigated genetic concepts and DNA coding through the sequencing of nucleotides. By utilising a computer simulation, students observed how viruses use mutations to increase their virulence.

The day concluded with the students engaging in Quantum Victoria’s bespoke ‘Alternate Reality Game’, The Virus. Through the scenario-based challenge, students raced against the clock as a global pandemic threatens humanity.  Students problem solved, used algorithmic thinking and mathematics without numbers, words, or calculations during the immersive game.

The students undertook a number of quests to decipher different aspects of viral code to combat virus “Q”.
