Celebrations of Learning and Community

Year 9 City Experience

Term 4 has been an exciting and meaningful time for our Year 9 students, filled with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.

Highlights of the term were the City Experience excursions, where students visited the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the National Sports Museum, and the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.

At the MCG, students explored the behind-the-scenes areas of one of Australia’s most iconic sporting venues and learned about the rich history of Australian sport at the National Sports Museum. Interactive exhibits and inspiring athlete stories encouraged teamwork, determination, and resilience.

The visit to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum provided a powerful contrast, offering students the chance to reflect on the importance of compassion, tolerance, and standing up for others. Through survivor testimonies and guided activities, students gained valuable insight into the human stories behind one of history’s most significant events.

As the term continues, Year 9 students are now focusing on preparing for exams and participating in Community Days.

To finish the year, students will take part in Year 10 Orientation, an important step as they begin their transition into the senior years. This program will help them set goals, understand expectations, and look ahead to the exciting challenges and opportunities of Year 10.

We’re proud of the maturity and enthusiasm Year 9 students have shown throughout Term 4, a true reflection of their growth as learners and members of our College community.

VET Hospitality and Cookery

Recently at HGC, our first-year VET Hospitality and Cookery students have been working towards using their acquired industry skills to contribute to the college in a number of positive ways.

Firstly, the ‘HGC Treats’ pop-up bakery. Students were tasked with designing an advertising and marketing campaign to promote the pop-up bakery within the College, then to prepare and display the baked goods, and provide customer service in a real-world industry environment to meet their VET outcomes. Our students prepared delightful Red Velvet Cupcakes, Lemon Meringue Tarts and Traditional English Scones and were upselling like professionals to our lucky staff in a very successful event.

Secondly, our VET students prepared and served canapes and finger food at the recent HGC Art & Technology Evening to showcase and promote themselves and the VET program within the College,  all whilst contributing again towards meeting their VET outcomes. Our students were very well received by our parent and student community and did an amazing job in promoting the program whilst preparing and serving some delicious food for the event.

Finally, in their last event for the 2025 year, VET students will be providing some catering for our upcoming Year 12 Graduation event in Week 7. Students will prepare and serve some more delicious treats to help celebrate the success of our graduating Year 12 community and be provided with valuable industry experience in return.

VCE VM Camp - Portsea

Current Year 10 and 11 students undertaking a VCE VM in 2026 headed off to Camp Portsea to kick off their VCE VM program ahead of Early Start classes taking place in November and December this year. Please see below for a reflection from a current Year 10 student, Sammy T.

VM Camp at Camp Portsea was such an awesome experience! On the first day, we faced the high ropes course in the rain and built a catapult to launch a ball and the person closest to where it landed got out of dinner duty!

The second day was my favourite, we started off with team building games, which included a tug of war, then we went on a beach walk where we swam, took some nice photos (thanks Mr Davies!), and even saw some squids get caught and squirt ink at us. Kayaking towards Sorrento was so peaceful, and our beach games were full of laughter and a bit of cheating!

On the last day, we sat together under the verandah while it rained and reflected on all the fun we’d had. My favourite part was hanging out with everyone in VM and meeting and building relationships with new people, especially during the night activities like trivia, bingo, and roasting marshmallows around the fire.

I’d love to do this camp again. Anyone doing VM in the future should definitely look forward to it!

- Sammy T - Year 10

College Art & Technology Show

In Week 5, we celebrated our annual College Art & Technology Evening. We had a fantastic turnout from the community who were able to visit exhibits from Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Product Design, Information Technology, Textiles and Food Technology subjects. The work on display was outstanding. Some highlights included the very popular badge-making station (thank you, Ms. Hill!) and the tasty food prepared by our very own students in the kitchen. A sincere thank you to all of the staff involved and student volunteers, particularly students who assisted with hosting and the BBQ and helped guide our College community.

VIT Full Registration

This week, four of our provisionally registered teachers received their full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Part of this includes undertaking an extensive inquiry into an area of interest relating to their teaching practice. The inquiry is presented to a panel, including the College Principal and other members of leadership. We would like to acknowledge the wonderful work and commitment of our Graduate Teachers: Mr. Williams, Ms. Johnstone, Ms. Maggio and Ms. Velves.
