Student Voice & Agency

Justin Turner

At Lilydale Heights College, we believe that students should play an active role in shaping their learning experiences. This year, we are strengthening our focus on Student Voice and Agency—but what does that mean?   Student Voice is about students having a say in their education, sharing their perspectives and providing meaningful feedback. Student Agency goes further, empowering students to take ownership of their learning by making informed choices and setting personal goals.

Why is this important?

Research shows that when students feel heard and have control over their learning, they are more engaged, motivated and confident in their abilities.

What are we doing at LHC?

To support Student Voice, we are introducing initiatives such as the Student Voice Team. Additionally, upcoming subject evaluation surveys will give students an opportunity to provide feedback on their classroom experiences.

Student Agency is being promoted through our use of Learning Pathways at Years 7 and 8. Learning Pathways is a tool that helps students track their progress and identify their next steps in learning. This supports them in becoming independent, reflective learners.

Year 7 Maths Litter AuditWritten by Max, Patrick and Zara from 7C

In Maths, we did a litter audit where each class broke off into different groups and was assigned different parts of the school to clean up. As we picked up the rubbish, we also counted it and put it in the bin.

Our observations show that the amount of litter has decreased in 2025 compared to 2024. However, the area outside the H-Wing has not decreased by much, which shows that we are starting to understand the importance of putting our rubbish in the bin and keeping our school clean.

Overall, we have been putting most of our trash in the bin, keeping the school ecosystem nice and clean!
