History of the Sport House System at Lilydale Heights College

The House system started in 2004, set up by Mr Wright who was one of the Phys. Ed. teachers at the College at that time (and not the Assistant Principal or even Head of Senior School!), in his first year as Sport Coordinator.

It was set up for all Year 7 – 9 students to start with, with it being optional for the other students, to have some inter-form competition. The first Carnival it ran with was the Swimming Sports. Apparently it was 18 degrees, no one went in the pool and everyone was back at the school by recess!

The four Houses were named for the following reasons:

Blue House - Olinda – the Olinda Creek was originally called the running creek because it was a perennial stream.  It was named after the daughter of one of the major designers of Melbourne and the man who planned Warrandyte, Clement Hodgkinson.

Yellow House - Castella -  Paul de Castella was one of the early settlers to the area. He owned the Yering Cattle station and in 1856 planted the first vineyard in Victoria.  Many believe that the town Lilydale was named after his wife Lily De Castella.

Green House - Melba  - Dame Nellie Melba – world famous Opera singer.  Lived in Coldstream and built the Melba estate.

Red House - Yarra - named after the river.  Originally the river was called Birrarung by the Wurundjeri;  the name was mistranslated from Yarro-Yarro which meant ever flowing.

Our House Captains for 2025 are:

Yarra – Imogen M. Jessica D., Dean W., Liv M.

Olinda – Jack W., Jairus G., Cindy S.

Melba – Tahlia P., Angela S., Jacob D., Ashley B.

Castella – Ella W., Jake A., Mikayla M.

INTERSCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

On February 19th and 27th, students from Lilydale Heights College represented the school in Volleyball. On February 19th, senior students competed in the Senior Volleyball competition, with both teams winning a few games against highly competitive schools. The students demonstrated great teamwork and determination throughout the day, making it an exciting and rewarding experience for all involved. On February 27th, Year 9 &10 students participated in the Intermediate Volleyball competition, also showing excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. Both events were a great success, with students from all of these year levels showcasing their skills and school spirit, making it a fantastic start to this year’s interschool sport.

COLLEGE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

A reminder that the College Swimming Carnival will be held on March 11. At the pool, students will sit in their House Groups and compete for points for their House in both swimming and novelty events. Students are greatly encouraged to come in House Colours or costume on the day, with prizes awarded for best dressed!    Students should protect themselves from the sun by wearing a shirt and hat and should bring sunscreen with them, continuing to reapply it throughout the day.

The due date for consent and payment is Monday, March 3. Please note that we cannot extend the due date for consent and payment or take late payments for any school events. Students who do not have consent/payment are expected to attend school where they will be supervised to complete learning tasks or study.

Be sure to mark your calendars and get ready for an exciting day of competition!
