The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Year 7 and 9 students is held in March each year.
NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.
How are NAPLAN results used?
• Students and parents/carers can use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
• Teachers use results to help identify students who need greater challenges or extra support.
• Schools use results to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching programs and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
• School systems use results to review the effectiveness of programs and support offered to schools.
NAPLAN testing will be online for all tests and all students. NAPLAN scheduling has been posted to Compass. Students and parents can see their sessions in the Timetable.
Students will have an opportunity in their SELF class to become familiar with the question types in the NAPLAN Online tests. Any parents or students that would like to familiarise themselves with the testing format can do this at any time via the following link: https://nap.edu.au/naplan/public-demonstration-site
Support can be arranged for students with disabilities if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks. Supports can include additional time, rest breaks and scribe.
Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. If your child is eligible for support due to disability or exemption, you should discuss this with their Learning Leader (Ben Shepherd for Year 7 benjamin.sheperd@education.vic.gov.au and Troy McGown troy.mcgown@education.vic.gov.au for Year 9) prior to the tests. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted.
NAPLAN tests are a routine part of the school calendar. However, students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer for reasons such as religious beliefs or philosophical objections to testing. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents/carers and in consultation with the College. A formal application must be received by the Principal prior to testing and can be arranged by contacting our Leader of Teaching and Learning; Kelly Taylor Kelly.taylor@education.vic.gov.au
