Curriculum Matters

Foundation

The students have made a brilliant start to the year!

We have been incredibly busy learning our morning routines, how to make new friends, demonstrating our school values to earn LOTS of SWPBS tokens, counting our first 13 days of school and creating beautiful art work to decorate our classrooms.

Well done to all the Foundies…they should all be very proud of themselves.

Level 1

To celebrate Valentine's Day, our students made delicious fairy bread and crafted cute cards for their loved ones. It was wonderful to see their creativity and thoughtfulness as they decorated their cards with care.

In Inquiry, students have been exploring the concept of time by creating timelines of their lives, starting from when they were babies and imagining themselves as future grown-ups. This activity sparked great conversations and allowed students to reflect on their past while imagining the future.

Maths has been full of excitement with lots of counting games that make learning numbers fun and engaging. Students have also completed several assessments to help us understand their progress and tailor future lessons to their needs.

During Literacy, we dived into the story of 'The Paper Bag Princess'. The students loved acting out scenes from the book and even created their own versions of the story.

Their creativity and enthusiasm were truly inspiring!

This term, we also started special sessions with Laura to learn about 'Mindful Monsters' and how they can help us understand and manage our emotions through the Zones of Regulation. These sessions are helping students develop important social and emotional skills in a fun and interactive way.

Level 2

We have had so much fun in Level 2 learning about persuasive writing. We were all so shocked when we arrived at school to find out that our chairs had gone on strike!

Our chairs decided to quit being chairs for the day. Our task was to write a persuasive letter to get our chairs back! We had to be creative and come up with many convincing arguments. We explored how using persuasive techniques such as emotive language and rhetorical questions really supported our arguments. We hope the chairs never quit again! 🙁

Level 3

The Level 3 students have been having a great couple of weeks settling into the school routine and getting ready for our very first NAPLAN coming up in a few weeks.

Students have been working hard to create detailed and interesting narratives and learning to calculate change. We have also been enjoying learning about life cycles and living and nonliving things. We have lots more information to fill our big brains with before we head to Melbourne Zoo in a couple of weeks.

The Level 3 students were very lucky to celebrate Valentine's day with their teachers and classmates. We showed kindness and love to our classmates by each writing a nice thing  on each other's heart. We didn't forget about showing love to ourselves as we created positive affirmation chains to put up in our classroom with different things we love about us.

Lastly, we have been having so much fun building our teamwork skills during Level 3 sport. The Level 3’s have been practicing building their focus, communication and listening skills through a range of team building activities.

Level 4

Exploring Emotions

This week in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), our Level 4 students engaged in an interactive activity exploring different emotions through freeze-frames.

After presenting their freeze-frames to the class, students identified which emotions felt positive and comfortable and which were less comfortable or distressing. This hands-on approach helped students develop emotional awareness, empathy, and communication skills in a fun and engaging way!

Level 5

The Level 5 students have had a productive couple of weeks. During Social and Emotional Learning, we have explored the importance of manners, acted out and recognised different emotions, wrote down things we were grateful for and focussed on having a positive mindset with our learning and everyday life. The students used their positive mindset strategies during a cohort game of Kickball.

We have read various texts focusing on comprehension strategies, applied an abundance of writing techniques to engage our audience with narrative writing and explored place value of whole and decimal numbers. Students have segmented spelling words and applied spelling rules such as ‘dropping the final e’, ‘doubling the final consonant’ and ‘changing y to i’ to spell various words.

In Inquiry, we explored inclusion, by creating flags of where the students' families have originated from. We have revised the seven continents of the world and the names of oceans surrounding them. The students have also learnt about the equator, hemispheres, tropics and poles.

Part of our ‘Getting to Know You’ focus has been on personality traits. We had a creative time drawing our peers as animals that matched their personality and presenting it  to them.

Level 6

Level 1 & 6 Buddy Excursion

On Tuesday 18th February the Level 1 and 6 students enjoyed their first Buddy Activity together for 2025.

Teachers and students set off on a long walk to Jells Park chatting, laughing and puffing all the way. The students took part in a Nature Scavenger Hunt looking for bugs, plants, cobwebs, certain types of trees and leaves and all things nature.

Once we had a little rest, we walked to the playground for a bit more fun. The children loved spending time with their buddies and we look forward to many more wonderful activities throughout the year.
