Learning & Teaching

Dear LPS Community,
This year, we have introduced Literature Units across the whole school, enriching our students’ reading experiences. Prep – Grade 2 students are exploring themed picture storybooks, while Grade 3 – Grade 6 students are diving into novels that spark curiosity and critical thinking.
These Literature Units provide a knowledge-rich curriculum that enhances literacy, comprehension, and analytical skills. Through shared reading and class discussions, students are deepening their understanding of texts, expanding their vocabulary, and making meaningful connections with literature.
Here’s what some of our students had to say about their experiences:
Exploring Picture Storybooks and Novels:
📖 "I like following along and reading the sentences so I can read words that I don't know. Then I can learn them for next time." – Leo, 3SH
📖 "I like reading Matilda because the book is interesting." – Anders, 3SH
📖 "I like reading Matilda because I can learn how to sound out challenging words." – Madeline, 3SH
📖 "I like reading Matilda because I like following along, and talking about the text helps me to understand it." – Luna, 3RH
📖 "Reading a novel as a class allows me to visualise what’s happening in the story." – Mitchell, 5HA
Deepening Understanding Through Historical Novels:
📖 "I like it because it is really interesting reading about the world wars. It has tricky words, but we discuss it as a class and it helps me understand." – Georgia, 6AL
📖 "I am fascinated by war. It is fun to learn about it." – Lily, 5MA
📖 "I like how we get to learn about what they do in war, how horses were used, and what they had to carry." – Freya, 5MA
📖 "I really enjoy reading War Horse because it makes me feel emotional due to all the details used to describe what’s happening." – Quentin, 5HA
📖 "Reading a novel as a class allows me to visualise what’s happening in the story." – Mitchell, 5HA
📖 "I have really enjoyed writing the definitions of words because it expands my vocabulary." – Charlie, 5HA
📖 "I have learnt so much about the war that I wouldn’t have known or been interested in unless we read War Horse." – Sophie, 5HA
It’s wonderful to see our students so engaged with reading, exploring new worlds, and deepening their understanding of literature. We look forward to seeing their love of reading continue to grow as we build on this program in 2025!
