Class 6 News

PAMELA KEIL

Class Six is leaping into the new school year, beginning to learn more independently, and doing it with gusto!

The students are embracing their roles as heads of the primary school by leading the weekly assemblies! We had a wonderful lesson with Megan on the meaning of the Acknowledgement to Country. Each student created their own personal acknowledgment, expressing respect for the land and its traditional custodians. Each week, one student will share their acknowledgment during Assembly. This is part of the Australian History main lesson, which Megan will continue teaching later in the year.

Throughout the year, we will integrate our Gardening and Business Math curricula. In Class Three, the students learned about gardening and farming, even growing some grains. In Class Five, they explored botany, the role of pollinators, and nutrient cycles. Now, they are bringing this knowledge together in their Gardening curriculum.

At the end of last year, we looked into which vegetables would thrive over the summer, as well as the timing from planting to harvest to ensure we would have fresh produce ready at the start of this year. The root vegetables the students seeded and planted last year are now ready to harvest. As gardeners, they will need to maintain a steady supply of fresh produce for our market stall business.

To prepare for our garden market stall, we also refined our icy pole recipes with a focus on sales and profitability. Each student then created a flyer or poster to promote the stall, which will run every Wednesday afternoon from 2:40 to 3:30, with proceeds going toward the garden. Students will take turns preparing and managing the stall, learning how to calculate profits and losses, visualise data, and create surveys to determine what new products might sell well. This Gardening and Business Math lesson will continue throughout the year!

Amid all this, we’ve also had the opportunity to explore Ancient Greek Geometry and the fascinating things you can create with just a compass and a straight edge.

All in all, it’s been a fantastic start to Class Six!
