Setting the Rhythm for the Year

As we begin the year, it’s important to remember the essential theme of rhythm that runs through every aspect of Steiner education. Just as the seasons transition from Summer to Autumn, we too are settling into a new rhythm for the year. This rhythm is fundamental to supporting our students' emotional and academic growth. Through a steady and predictable structure, we create a sense of security and balance, which allows students to engage more fully with both their lessons and the world around them.

In Steiner education, we focus on the integration of head, heart, and hands—an approach that nurtures intellectual, emotional, and practical growth. This holistic development is made possible by our carefully structured school days. The rhythm of the day—starting with the main lessons, followed by creative activities such as handwork, outdoor play, and the arts—ensures that each child has the space to grow in a well-rounded, connected way.

As we move into Term 1, this rhythm is crucial for both our younger children, who are just starting to settle into the school year, and our older students, who will be deepening their academic and creative learning.

Outdoor Learning and Creative Expression

Our connection to the natural world plays a key role in establishing this rhythm. In the early weeks of the year, students will spend time outside, engaging with the environment in ways that deepen their connection to nature. Whether it’s through mud play in the early years or early morning nature walks in the primary school (weather permitting), these outdoor activities support the development of both the body and the spirit. Creative expression, too, plays a central role in our school. From storytelling to artistic endeavours, students are encouraged to explore and express themselves through a variety of mediums.

Upcoming Events & Community Engagement

We have some wonderful events coming up that will allow families to connect with each other and with the school community.

  • Primary Swimming Carnival (March 14, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm): Classes 2 to 6 will participate in the Primary Swimming Carnival, which is always a fun and exciting day of friendly competition and team spirit. We encourage parents to come along and cheer on the students!

  • Class 1 Water Play Day (March 14): While the primary school students are at the Swimming Carnival, our Class 1 students will enjoy a special Water Play Day, where they will engage in water-based activities that align with their development. More details about this day will come from Harry as we approach the date.

  • Parent & Teacher Meetings (Feb 27): On February 27, we will be hosting our Parent-Teacher meetings for both Primary and Middle School families. It’s a great opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher, discuss the curriculum, and share any important information. The schedule for these meetings is as follows:

  • Classes 1-4: 3:15 pm
  • Classes 5-9: 5:30 pm

We will have childcare available, along with light refreshments for students. This afternoon is always a wonderful time to connect with your child’s teacher and to learn more about their year ahead.

  • Farm Garden & Working Bee Events: Our Farm Garden is another fantastic way for families to get involved in the school community. This term, Kaz will be running events on caring for chickens and even building a chicken coop! Stay tuned for more details on these upcoming events and working bees—these are wonderful opportunities to connect with nature and with other families.

  • Parent Craft Group: A great way to become more involved in our school community is to join our Parent Craft Group, which meets regularly throughout the term. This group is not only an opportunity to meet new parents and share skills, but also a chance to create beautiful craft items for sale at our Autumn Fair and at the school office. We’d love to see you there—whether you are an experienced craftsperson or someone simply looking to learn something new! Please contact Hannah Cooke on 0429 661 244 to be added to the Parent Craft WhatsApp group.

Closing Thoughts

As we set our rhythm for the year, I encourage you to think about how rhythm plays a role in your home life as well. How can you create a steady rhythm that supports your child’s emotional well-being and development? Perhaps try a simple routine around mealtimes, outdoor play, or crafting activities. Even small gestures like creating a cosy, consistent space for creativity or spending time in nature can make a world of difference for your child.

In the words of Rudolf Steiner, “Rhythm is the key to the soul's development.” Let’s keep this in mind as we work together to create a supportive, rhythmic, and engaging environment for our children.

We look forward to a wonderful term filled with learning, growth, and community. Thank you for being an essential part of our school’s journey.

And for those new to the school our School Newsletter is fortnightly. In here, we share upcoming events such as parent information nights etc., class updates & parent group information.
