Heads of Secondary Years' Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Hazel Glen College,

Welcome to the 2025 school year and our first newsletter of the year!

A very warm welcome to our new staff and students and our new Head of Secondary Years - Positive Climate & Engagement: Luke Carey.

As we begin another exciting school year, we are filled with great enthusiasm for the opportunities that lie ahead.

We are excited to focus on our theme for 2025:  Building Connections

Connections between students, teachers, families, and the broader school community. Strong relationships are the foundation of a positive and successful learning environment. Through the provision of a number of in-class and extracurricular events and opportunities students will learn more about themselves and those around them, they will develop a sense of belonging and form connections, not only to our College, but also to each other. Please remember to check our College social media posts for regular updates from our classrooms. You can visit them here: HGC Facebook and HGC Instagram

We encourage your children to take full advantage of the opportunities available this year, whether it’s participating in classroom discussions, joining a club or attending special events like camps and excursions.

Already this year we have celebrated our community with our whole Secondary Years assembly on Monday the 10th of February and  Random Acts of Kindness Day on Monday the 17th of February. We celebrated the start of the final year of secondary school for our Year 12 students with a special welcome breakfast and celebrated girls in Science with some of our Year 10 students during a visit from Rob Mitchell's office. There are more opportunities to get involved in the coming weeks with lunchtime clubs, auditions for the College production and the upcoming swimming carnival.

We are also focusing on High Expectations this year and will communicate some changes to reports and homework guidelines to support this focus in the coming weeks.

We want to work to support all of our students to reach their full potential and continue to challenge our students academically, socially, and personally, encouraging them to push boundaries and embrace the opportunities that come their way. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth, and together, we will strive for excellence in all we do.

BIKE SAFETY

We have a number of Secondary Years students who ride their bikes to and from school. Please remind your children that Victorian cyclists are required by law to wear a helmet that must be securely fitted and fastened. This law applies to roads, bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, footpaths, shared paths and separated footpaths. It also includes other public places such as recreational parks and car parks. A fine may be issued for those not wearing a securely fitted helmet.
