What's Happening in Grade 2?

Welcome to a new Grade Two Year!
Ms Anna Kourkoulis and Ms Ann Gemayel are this year's Grade 2 teachers.
The students have settled in smoothly to the new school year and have enjoyed collaborating with friends across both classrooms. We have also been very lucky to have the assistance of two pre service teachers, Miss Matea and Miss Linda who have thoroughly enjoyed their four weeks of teaching your children and learning.
A key focus of our learning has been the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) lessons, where we’ve been using our school’s matrix. We’ve been establishing classroom expectations and routines based on our core values of Learning, Respect, Resilience, and Teamwork. These values are also being applied in various other school settings. Additionally, eSafety has been an important focus, ensuring that students use digital technologies in a safe and respectful manner.
In English, we’ve been focusing on procedural texts for both reading and writing. Students have been learning about the purpose, structure, and key language features of procedures, including identifying imperative verbs and incorporating them into their writing. To practice, they’ve been given hands-on activities like making fairy bread and popcorn. Students have made great progress and will continue to be encouraged to apply their learning with greater independence.
In Mathematics, we’ve been exploring Place Value with two- and three-digit numbers. Using concrete materials, students have engaged in a range of tasks, games, and activities to understand how numbers are represented and the value of their place. They’ve also been working on ordering numbers and practicing skip counting from different starting points.
In addition, we’ve been learning about Time with calendars, months and matching them to the seasons. We have just begun our learning about Data Representation and Interpretation. We started the unit by creating a birthday graph as a class, and students wrote comparative statements about which months had the most and least birthdays. They will continue their learning by asking the ‘right’ types of questions to gather data, record their findings with tally marks and then create simple graphs.
We’re all excited about the upcoming whole-school event and Harmony Day activities, so get ready for more fun and learning ahead!
With many thanks for your ongoing support,
The Grade Two Team
