Grade 4

Literacy

Students completed their novel study of Uncle Xbox by Jared Thomas, reflecting on the important themes, characters and messages explored throughout the text. They engaged in discussions about relationships, identity and community, while developing their comprehension skills through summarising, predicting and responding to the novel. Students demonstrated thoughtful connections to the story and shared their ideas confidently during class discussions and written responses.

Students are now preparing to begin a new novel study on The Arrival by Shaun Tan. They will explore the unique visual style of the text and make predictions about the storyline, characters and themes based on the illustrations and very little text. Through this introduction, students will be encouraged to think about ideas such as migration, belonging and new experiences, while building their visual literacy and inferencing skills.

Numeracy

Over the past weeks, students explored polygons and composite shapes, identifying and describing the different 2D shapes that combine to create them. They investigated the features of shapes, including the number of sides, vertices and angles, and discussed how familiar shapes such as rectangles, triangles and squares can be joined together to form composite shapes. Through hands-on activities and class discussions, students strengthened their understanding of shape properties and spatial reasoning skills.

Students have also revisited the CUBES strategy to support their mathematical problem-solving. They practised circling important numbers, underlining the question, boxing key words, evaluating the steps needed and solving problems carefully. By applying the CUBES strategy to a range of worded problems, students were encouraged to slow down, think critically and explain their mathematical reasoning with greater confidence and accuracy.

Camp

We are very much looking forward to leaving for Camp on Wednesday! Remember to check Compass for the packing list, bringing both warm clothes and clothes that are okay to become muddy/dirty from activities.
