Grade 2

Literacy
This fortnight, Grade 2 students have been building important literacy skills across reading, spelling, and writing. During reading sessions, students have been practising the comprehension strategy of visualising. As they listen to or read a text, students are encouraged to create a “movie in their mind” by imagining what is happening in the story. They then draw pictures to represent the images they visualised, helping them to deepen their understanding and make stronger connections to the text.
In spelling, students have been learning how to apply the doubling rule when adding -ing to words. They explored when to double the final consonant before adding -ing, such as changing run to running and hop to hopping. Through word sorts, games, and writing activities, students have been building confidence in recognising and applying this spelling pattern independently.
This week in Grammar, students have been reviewing their understanding of nouns, pronouns, noun groups and adjectives. They have also been introduced to verbs and explored how verbs are used to describe actions in a sentence. Students practised identifying verbs within sentences and participated in engaging discussions about verbs that could be used to describe different pictures and actions. These activities have helped students strengthen their understanding of sentence structure and build their vocabulary when speaking and writing.
Writing
This week in Writing, our Year 2 students used the informative text as a mentor text to explore how diagrams, illustrations and text features help readers understand information. Students learned how to plan and write a factual recount by organising events into a Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) and then turning their notes into clear, informative paragraphs using time connectives and topic-specific vocabulary.
Throughout the week, students created and published their own newspaper articles about the Mars rover Curiosity, including headlines, diagrams and labelled illustrations to support their information. Students also demonstrated their narrative writing skills by planning and writing an imaginative story about an abandoned city, focusing on story structure, conjunctions and correct punctuation.
Maths
In the past fortnight, students have been introduced to measuring, specifically using informal units to measure and compare the length of shapes and objects around the classroom. Practising this skill, the Grade 2’s have begun estimating various lengths of items to check whether they have made a reasonable guess or not, improving their understanding of measurement.
Students have also been learning about calculating doubles facts, as well as using a number line to solve various addition equations. Moreover, the Grade 2’s have been solving more addition and subtraction problems using mental calculations strategies, using these to better understand how fact families work.
