 5/6 CLASSROOM

We have had a great fortnight in Grade 5/6, with plenty of learning, teamwork and positive participation. Students have worked hard in class, supported one another and continued to demonstrate our school values each day. These same qualities were also evident on camp, where students stepped outside their comfort zones, encouraged their peers and made the most of every opportunity. We have also completed a number of assessments recently, with students giving their best effort and approaching each task with a positive attitude. We are very proud of the effort and teamwork shown by all students.

English

Students have been working on their factual recounts about the 1967 Referendum and have written some wonderful paragraphs. Their writing has reflected a growing understanding of this significant event in Australia's history, with many students demonstrating strong historical knowledge and thoughtful use of factual information.

Maths

In Maths, we have continued our daily Maths Fluency sessions, which involve one-minute timed tests focused on times tables facts. Each day, students practise a small selection of multiplication facts, helping them develop greater speed, accuracy and confidence. This regular practice supports students in becoming more fluent when recalling and applying their times tables knowledge.

Art

Students recently explored the work of Albert Namatjira, learning about his landscape paintings and the use of texture in Indigenous art. Using chalk pastels, students created vibrant sunset backgrounds and practised blending techniques before adding textured bark and ghost gum tree silhouettes using torn paper. Each individual piece will be combined to create one continuous landscape display, showcasing students’ creativity, artistic skills and understanding of Namatjira’s work.

Inquiry

As part of our Inquiry learning, students have explored sustainable practices and environmental laws, learning about the many ways people can care for and protect the environment. Students also practised their research skills by finding and recording key information from reliable sources. It has been wonderful to see them making connections between their learning and the role we all play in caring for our world.

Here is a glimpse into some of the wonderful camp reflection written by our Grade 5/6 students. Their responses captures the fun, friendships, adventures, and special memories made during our camp experience.

What was the most exciting thing you did at camp?

  • The most exciting thing was the zip-line because we got to jump off a high platform. It was a little bit scary, but it was also really fun and exciting.
  • The most exciting thing I did at camp was probably the zip-line because it was so high. It was a little bit scary at first, but it was really fun when I jumped off the platform and flew through the air.

What was your favourite camp activity?

  • My favourite activity was the zip-line because I felt like I was flying in the sky.
  • My favourite activity was free time because we got to play football. It was Rushworth versus Heathcote, which made it really exciting and competitive. I enjoyed working with my teammates and playing against students from the other school.
  • My favourite activity was archery because it was really fun and exciting. We competed against Heathcote, and our team ended up taking the win, which made it even more enjoyable.

Did you try something new at camp?

  • I tried rock climbing for the first time. At first, I felt scared, but when I got to the top, I felt fine and was proud of myself.
  • I did lots of activities, including the zip-line, rock climbing, the Amazing Race, archery, bush cooking and low ropes. I think I did a good job in all of them. Before I did some of the activities, I felt nervous and a bit scared, but I gave them a go and had fun.
  • Something new I tried at camp was low ropes. I had never done it before, but I enjoyed challenging myself and learning new skills.
  • I did the Amazing Race, which was an activity where you were given questions and had to find the answers around the camp. Once you found the answer, you checked to see if you were correct. It was fun because it made you think and work as a team.

What was a challenge you faced at camp?

  • One challenge I faced during the Amazing Race was finding the animal statues around the camp. It was difficult because some of them were hidden, and we had to search carefully to find them all.
  • A challenge I faced at camp was trying to get to the top of the rock climbing wall. It was difficult, but I kept trying and eventually made it to the top. I felt really proud of myself when I got there.
  • A challenge I faced at camp was trying to get a bullseye in archery. It was harder than I expected, but I kept practising and tried my best to improve my aim.

What is one memory from camp that you will never forget?

  • The memory I’ll never forget is when I reached the top of the rock climbing wall. At first, I felt nervous, but when I got to the top, I felt really proud of myself.

How did you show teamwork at camp?

  • I showed teamwork during the Amazing Race because I helped my team and worked well with others to complete the challenges.
  • I showed teamwork by being a good spotter during low ropes when I was working with Hunter. I helped support and encourage him as we completed the activity together.

What was the funniest moment at camp?

  • One memory I will never forget is all the laughs we had at night, especially when Hunter was being funny. I will also remember reaching the top of the rock climbing wall and having a great time doing archery.
  • One of the funniest moments at camp was during the Amazing Race when our team got a little confused and started looking in the wrong place for an answer. We all had a good laugh about it. Another funny moment was during free time football, when there were lots of funny mistakes and missed marks that made everyone laugh.

What advice would you give a Year 4 student who is going to camp next year?

  • My advice for a Year 4 student going to camp next year would be to have fun, try your best and give everything a go, even if it seems a little scary at first. You might feel nervous, but camp is a great experience where you can try new things, make great memories and have lots of fun with your friends.

How did camp make you feel proud of yourself?

  • Camp made me feel proud of myself because I tried new activities and challenged myself to do things that I was nervous about. Reaching the top of the rock climbing wall and giving every activity a go showed me that I can do more than I thought I could.
