Sport News

Last weekend saw Marist host Villanova College across several key fixtures.

On Friday, our First IV Chess team faced a strong Villanova side in a closely contested battle. Unfortunately, they were unable to secure the overall victory, with the program finishing with one win, three draws, and three losses.

The First XI delivered a strong performance, securing a convincing 2–0 victory and currently sitting in second place overall.

The First XV continued their impressive form, recording a dominant 40–5 win. This weekend is a crucial fixture, with a victory securing the title of individual premiers, while a loss would result in dual premier.

As we head into the last weekend of the Term 2 sports the College acknowledges and thanks the Year 12 boys for their efforts over the years, many of whom have played year on year since Year 5. We wish you all the very best for your final matches this weekend in the blue and gold. We hope that you engage with the Old Boys and return to cheer on your old school in the future. No doubt the tries will get bigger and the goals more spectacular as the years go by, but hopefully the memories never fade.

Super Saturday

This weekend we will be facing Padua in our annual Super Saturday event. There will be lots of entertainment and activities around the grounds on the day. This is the day you play- you stay. Looking forward in seeing you all there.

Cross Country

Well done to our Cross Country team who won the Primary and the Secondary AIC championships last Wednesday at Curlew Park. Aged Champion:14 years – Fred Little

Thank you to Matt Millward, Marcus Schrader, Tom Prole, Zac Milligan, Asher Parkin, Brendan Jansons, Brendan Saunders, Emmanuel Geu, Matt Pimm, Sasha Sofronoff, Ben Adams and John Lambourne for the efforts in coaching the Cross-Country program this year.

Congratulations to Tom Novak (Year 10) on an outstanding performance at the Darling Downs Schools Rocky Trail Academy Mountain Biking Competition held on Friday 5 June. Tom achieved his best result to date, placing 7th out of 127 riders in the Intermediate Years 9–10 age group. This impressive result also saw Tom finish 11th overall across all age groups out of 294 riders, including recording the 5th fastest time on one track out of more than 300 competitors. Tom’s dedication, skill, and commitment to mountain biking continue to be reflected in his performances, and we congratulate him on this fantastic achievement.

Marist was also well represented at the event, with Zach Lympaney, Eli Phillips, and Tom Price competing in the Intermediate Years 9–10 category. Luca Pozzebon produced an exceptional performance in the Junior Years 7–8 event, taking out first place in his age group and finishing 16th overall across all age groups — a remarkable achievement for a junior rider competing against a large field. Congratulations to all students involved for their efforts and commitment to the sport.

Anderson Wild and Kai McKenna represented Brisbane Metro at the 2026 Australian Little League Baseball Championships, stepping up against some of the best young talent in the country. Across a hard-fought tournament, the team secured 4 wins and narrowly missed a finals place with 3 losses - an outstanding effort at such a high level of competition.

Both boys were pivotal to their team’s success. On the mound, Kai and Anderson delivered strong pitching performances, showing composure and skill under pressure. At the plate, they were equally impressive, combining for multiple big hits and consistently driving in runs to keep their team competitive in every game.

Beyond the results, the experience was about far more than wins and losses. Kai and Anderson built strong connections within their squad and formed friendships with players from across Australia. A fitting end to the tournament saw teams swap jerseys, a special moment symbolising respect, camaraderie, and memories that will last well beyond the competition.

It was a fantastic achievement and an experience they’ll carry forward. There’s no doubt we’ll see them back in the national stage again on the future.

His ability to engage the crowd and enhance the match-day experience did not go unnoticed. Events like these rely on good people willing to go above and beyond. Best of luck to all teams for our final game and another great weekend of rugby.

Marist Rugby Union | Round 6 vs Villanova College

Saturday’s round of rugby against Villanova was played in perfect conditions, with sunny skies and a huge crowd spread across the College creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day. Across 27 fixtures against Villanova, Marist recorded an outstanding 22 wins, reflecting the strength and depth of the program.

Thanks also to Gregory Terrace, Iona and St Laurence’s for playing further games here at the College or hosting our teams away.

The day built superbly to the final match at McMahon Oval, where the 1st XV delivered an exceptional performance in front of a large and passionate crowd. Playing with confidence, physicality and a strong connection, the team secured a dominant 40–5 victory to remain undefeated heading into the final round. A special thanks to The Hive and all supporters for demonstrating their support for the team in a game that meant so much.

Remarkably, our aggregate teams which are 1st XV through to 4th XV sides are all undefeated at this stage of the season. This an extraordinary achievement and a testament to the hard work of players and coaches across these teams. Congratulations again to the Opens cohort for a spectacular weekend with the 5th XV beating Gregory Terrace 4th XV, the 6th XV winning against Padua’s 5th XV, whilst the 7th – 9th XV played a three way here at the College.

The Year 9 and 10 teams continued their strong form with a series of excellent performances across both year levels. These groups have developed a strong sense of consistency, building success through teamwork and high skill execution. There has been a significant amount of growth, with healthy competition for places creating a positive and challenging learning environment that continues to drive improvement.

The Year 8 teams continue to navigate a range of challenges each week. While disruption and results can test any group, it has been pleasing to hear coaches speak so positively about the growth and resilience being shown. Adversity is never easy, but it provides valuable lessons, and these experiences will undoubtedly strengthen the players as they continue to develop.

The Year 7 teams enjoyed a fantastic day on Hayden Oval, beginning with a strong 7C fixture and building through to the 7A match. It is clear this is a united and aligned group of coaches and players, and the smiles on their faces reflect the enjoyment they are getting from their rugby. Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and positive approach are a great sign for the future of the program.

Thank you to our outstanding coordinators and dedicated coaching staff for the care and preparation they continue to provide each week. Congratulations to all students on their impressive efforts over the weekend. With one round remaining, the focus now shifts to finishing the season strongly while continuing to build great friendships and create lasting memories.
