Grade 2 News
As we move towards the end of Term 2, we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the wonderful effort and growth shown by our Grade 2 students. It has been fantastic to see students continue to build their confidence, independence and learning skills across all curriculum areas. They have approached new challenges with enthusiasm and demonstrated persistence in their learning and have become more resilient with social relationships.
With only a few weeks remaining in the term, students are completing assessment tasks and reflecting on the progress they have made throughout the semester. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to celebrating their hard work when reports are released at the end of the term.
Students have continued to enjoy borrowing books from the library each week with Miss Sallee, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for reading grow throughout the term including the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Thank you for your ongoing support with home reading.
Maths: Fractions
Over the past few weeks, students have been learning about fractions and developing their understanding of how fractions represent equal parts of a whole. They have explored halves, quarters and eighths through a range of hands-on activities involving shapes, collections and everyday objects.
Students have practised identifying and creating equal parts, as well as recognising when parts are not equal. More recently, they have been comparing fractions and using mathematical language such as greater than, less than and equal to to describe and justify their thinking. They have compared fractions represented in shapes and collections and have begun explaining how they know which fraction is larger or smaller.
It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence as they use visual models and mathematical reasoning to solve fraction problems and share their understanding with others.
English: Information Reports & Zoo Excursion
Our recent Werribee Open Range Zoo excursion was a fantastic experience! Students enjoyed observing a variety of animals including elephants, lions and meerkats, as well as learning about their habitats, diets and adaptations from the zookeepers. A highlight for most was the Safari Bus where students got up close and personal with rhinos, hippos and zebras! We have been using our observations and experiences from the excursion to support our learning in our literature unit on Information reports. They have been researching topics, organising facts into sections, and using headings, topic sentences and interesting vocabulary to share information clearly with their readers.
Humanities: Inventions
In Humanities, students have been exploring inventions and how they have changed the way people live, communicate, travel and stay healthy. We have discussed important inventions from the past and considered how new inventions continue to improve our daily lives. In the coming weeks, students will learn how to innovate their own invention and present this to their peers!
Reminders
Please remember to send your child's home reading satchel and diary to school each day. We encourage students to read regularly at home and record their reading in their diary so we can celebrate their efforts and progress together. Consistent home reading helps develop fluency, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.
With the colder weather now upon us, please ensure your child is dressed warmly each day so they can stay comfortable, and avoid sickness, while enjoying outdoor play and learning opportunities.
