Grade 1 News

Good afternoon Grade 1 Families,

What an amazing term it has been! We have seen so much growth and development in the students and are blown away by the amazing work they produce each day. Their consistent kindness, persistence, and excitement to learn has been inspiring.

Classroom Snapshot

English

Over the course of this term, we have continued to learn the long vowel sounds, looking at reading and writing graphemes such as: /ea/, /ai/, /ie/, /aw/. We have continued to practise manipulating sounds, segmenting and blending words and identifying rhyming patterns each morning. In Literature, we have read the text Sunday Skating and started writing recounts using time connectives such as ‘first’, ‘next’, and ‘finally’. Coming towards the end of the term, we are preparing to read the text How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth, where students will begin writing procedures using command sentences and verbs.

Maths

After a successful Additive Thinking unit, we have moved on to teaching Informal Measurement. The students have loved using unifix blocks, MAB blocks and counters to measure and compare the lengths of different items around the classroom. They have also begun using balance scales to identify the weight of objects and have especially enjoyed using jugs and water to find and compare different capacities.

Humanities

In Humanities this term, we have explored the four Western seasons, and identified adjectives we can use to describe the different weather patterns we see throughout the year. The students had a go mapping the temperature over the course of one week and even helped their teacher to develop a weather graph! Over the course of the unit, we also introduced the students to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander seasons, we specially looked at the Yawuru calendar, which has six seasons, and identified the different animals, plants and weather patterns that indicate the turning of their seasons. Coming into the end of the term we will start a new unit called Changing Families where we explore what different families look like, traditions, roles and responsibilities, and how families communicate.

SEL

In Social and Emotional Learning, students have continued to learn about their own personal strengths and begun to discuss what it means to be respectful to ourselves, to others, and to the world we live in. Students have enjoyed creating a class book about respect and we will continue to make more classroom displays about how we can treat ourselves and others kindly.

Library

Students are continuing to enjoy their Library sessions, please ensure they bring their reader satchel and borrowed books on their designated library day to ensure they are able to continue to explore and borrow new books.

Updates

Teeth on Wheels were unable to see all students in their allocated time so they will be coming back, if your child missed out the first time, there will be an opportunity for them to go when they return. The date of this is still being finalised, sorry for any inconvenience.
At the end of term, students will be completing a poster describing different elements of their family. Teachers will be sending home a sheet with different prompts about your amazing family. Would you mind sitting with your child and helping them to write or draw and label this sheet to help them complete their project at the end of the term. Thank you for your support in this!

Reminders

Please label all items of school uniform to ensure a quick return if they are lost
Please continue to encourage your children to complete their homework. This is reading for 10-15 minutes every night and recording it in their diaries. Many students are approaching 100 nights of reading and we are so proud of their hard work!
Please send all fruit snacks in an individual container separate to the lunchbox, this is to allow it to be placed on the students' desks throughout the day without taking up too much room.
Hats are no longer a requirement for outdoor play
