Grade 6 News

Hello grade 6 families,

It’s certainly been a very busy middle of the term in Grade 6 with many of our students attending Phillip Island Camp and representing our school at the Winter Gala day. Students have also been busy in the classroom, learning about astronomy, multiplicative thinking and reading a class novel study ‘How to Bee’. 

English:

In English, students have been reading the text ‘How to Bee’, a novel set in a dystopian world without bees. Students have been tracking and analysing the theme of hope, as well as the relationships between key characters within the story. We have also been learning about how to write media articles and are preparing to write an article by the end of the unit based on the story.

Maths

For the past few weeks, students have been learning about higher order multiplicative thinking involving understanding the properties of prime, composite and square numbers, as well as being able to multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by powers of 10. Students have been really engaged in their learning for this unit which has resulted in significant improvement in their understanding of these concepts.

Humanities/ Science

We have just completed a unit about astronomy where students learned about the planets in our solar system, the Earth’s rotation around the sun and the impact that has on seasons, days and weather, the Earth’s relationship with the Moon and natural phenomena such as solar and lunar eclipses. 

Camp

On the 18th- 20th May, many of our year 6 students attended the Phillip Island Camp. During the camp, students enjoyed many places and activities that the island had to offer. We visited the Churchill Island Heritage Farm, the Koala Conservation Park and ventured down to the shoreline at Newhaven. We also visited the Penguin Parade at sunset, to watch the fairy penguins make their way to their burrows from off the shoreline, which was a great experience. One of the other attractions of Phillip Island that we visited was A Maze n Things, an adventure centre that included a large maze, a mini golf course and room with different illusions such as a mirror maze. We hope that if your child attended, they enjoyed their time and that their camp experience was well worth it! Also, a big thank you to the teachers and staff for giving up their time to organise and facilitate the activities at camp.

Winter Gala Day

Last Wednesday, 4th June, many of our grade 6 students participated in the Winter Gala Day against other local schools, in the either soccer, Aussie rules football, volleyball or netball. Overall, we had quite a successful day, with all teams experiencing at least one win from their allotted games. It was great hearing from many of the students talk about some of the highlights they, or their teammates had during the day. As teachers, we were very impressed with how everyone represented our school on the day. 

Reminders

Next Wednesday 17th June is our Year 3-6 Athletics Day. Please ensure your child is prepared with appropriate footwear and have a drink bottle with them for the day. 

We have a 'Talk Money' incursion coming up on Tuesday 23rd June. This is free of charge and will happening at school. The incursion is to help prepare our year 6 students for an upcoming unit of learning about Business and Economics in Humanities during term 3.
