Reading Tips of the Week

Primary: The News Reporter

After reading, ask your child to pretend they're a news reporter covering the story. They have to answer: Who? What? Where? When? Why? You play the audience asking follow-up questions: "But why did the character do that?" "What happened next?"

Secondary: One Sentence, One Word

Ask your teen to summarise what they've read in exactly one sentence (no more). Then ask them to reduce that to a single word. Discuss: what did they have to leave out? Was that the right call? What does the word they chose reveal about what they think the text is really about?

Numeracy

Tips of the week:

Guess the Number

a) One person thinks of a number (start with 1–100, expand the range as confidence grows). The other asks yes/no questions. But they can only use maths language: "Is it more than 50?" "Is it an even number?" "Is it in the 6 times table?" Swap roles each round.

b) At weekend sport or while watching footy on TV, ask children to estimate the crowd. When travelling, estimate how much petrol will cost when filling up, or how long to get to a destination.

Active Learning

Our school is undertaking a push to ensure our students are active learners. The attached active learner matrix is present in all classrooms. In Huddle this week, most students will be doing an activity that focuses on one of the behaviours that drives active learning. We hope that all students will come to understand and embrace what it means to be an active learner.

Homework Club

Homework Club runs at lunchtime on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students are encouraged to come along and get their homework completed, catch up on missed work, or get some help. There’s teacher support in a quiet space and is open to all secondary students.
