Swimming Program
A reminder, that all Primary students have begun their swimming program this week: Wednesday 3rd - Friday 12th December. As part of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum, it is compulsory that Swimming and Water Safety is included. This means that schools must ensure that they are implementing a swimming and water safety program that meets the requirements of the curriculum. The Health and Physical Education curriculum includes four focus areas with specific reference to swimming and water safety which schools are required to teach:
Fundamental movement skills (FMS) = Develop foundation movement and skills to enable students to participate in a range of physical activities. E.g. Floating and moving the body through water.
Safety (S) = Practise behaviours and skills to keep themselves and others safe in and around water. E.g. Sun safety, use of protective equipment and first aid.
Lifelong physical activities (LPA) = Understand that swimming can enhance lifelong health-related fitness and wellbeing.
Challenge and adventure activities (CA) = Participate in challenging swimming activities in a range of contexts. E.g. underwater activities and diving.
Development of knowledge and skills relating to survival swimming and basic water safety can significantly reduce a child’s drowning risk and enhance community safety. This year, lessons will run for Years 3-6 from 11:15am-12:55pm and Years F-2 from 1:35pm-3:15pm. Students may be walking down to the pool depending upon age, weather etc. so are welcome to bring runners to wear when travelling. Students will swim every day, except Wednesday’s.
Students will need the following:
Bathers
Rash Vest or Shirt (compulsory – students must wear or they will not participate)
Goggles (not compulsory but very helpful)
Drink Bottle
Towel
Charlton College Wide Brim Hat
Sunscreen (students to supply own if allergic)
If you are struggling with any of the equipment required or have any questions, please contact the school.
