Literacy

Literacy @ BSPS!
Hello BSPS community! As we approach the end of another successful year of Literacy Learning, I thought it would be great to hear from our learners…
Anouk, Year 1: I have been doing a bit of handwriting, because it used to be messy and I can be faster now. I can also spell more.
Teddy C, Year 1: My writing at the very start of the year in my book was messy – but it is much better now. Now I can write an entire story. I can read Dogman now too, I couldn’t read it in Prep!
Harry, Year 1: I can read harder books now than at the start of the year – Minecraft is a bit hard, I will keep on trying. I also make Dogman comics in class.
Aiya, Year 2: I knew a lot of things from year 1, but I can use a strategy for spelling the word ‘because’ – just spell ‘be’ and then spell ‘cause’. We’re doing student choice writing right now and I’m writing a lot of chapter stories. When I edit my writing, I reread and I notice mistakes. I might sound the word out, or use my personal dictionary or ask the teacher to add it to my dictionary.
Dalia, Foundation: For reading we have been learning words and sentences. I can read a book now – one that I have at home.
Taavi, Foundation: I have been learning to read books that are hard to read. I am reading a book about animals doing the Olympics by myself. I am proud I can read that book, it makes me happy.
Freddie, Foundation: We have been writing procedural texts. Mine was about how to teach people to shoot goals properly in basketball.
Eva, Foundation: We read Italian books and write stuff about characters from the books. We do that with Nancy.
George, Year 5: I am more independent in Italian writing. I used to ask the teachers everything, now I know how to use dictionaries and reread my writing and use the editing process.
Seamus, Year 6: I feel more confident with speaking publically, having had more experience. We’ve done a lot of practice and I feel prepared for Grad.
Shamsa, Year 6: I am speaking out loud, with more volume, rather than rushing through. I want other people to hear me, so my opinion is heard!
Hannah, Year 6: I am confident talking and connecting with more people, just knowing that I can be with people and know things about them – we don’t have to be friends. Asking for help and asking good questions has helped me to do that.
Gabi, Year 4: Maybe the debating is what I have learned. I’ve done a bit of speaking in class, but this year during the debating cycle, my oral speech was better. Working in groups means more people can help you. That makes me feel pretty good, less shy.
Lulu, Year 3: I think I’ve learnt a lot of tricks about spelling, I used to guess them, but now I know them. I like things to be right, instead of wrong .
Ripley, Year 3: I really liked debating because you can make up what you want to say about the topic and it is really fun to do.
Nico, Year 3: On the Italian side, we have been writing jokes. I am gradually getting to the point where I can write better jokes. I read the book, The Far Side, and it gave me an idea for my chicken joke.
