Year 3/4

Year 3/4 Camp Writing
After returning from camp, students explored how to focus their writing when recounting real-life events. We used a fun pizza metaphor to guide their thinking: the whole pizza represented the camp, each slice symbolised a single activity, and each topping captured one specific moment within that activity.
Students were challenged to write about just one of these “toppings”—a single, meaningful moment. They did an excellent job narrowing their focus to create engaging and vivid pieces of writing.
Here are a few examples:
I didn’t believe the ladder was tied on properly. It was wobbly. Definitely not comforting. My hand touched the first peg. I clambered a little higher, determined not to look down. Finally my hand touched the platform. I pulled myself up. My heart was pounding. If I jumped I would definitely die. The rope was pulling me to the edge. I had no choice but to jump. If I did it, I could see death lying below me. I was surprised and relieved when I touched the ground.

Ahh! We all screamed at the same time as the light went off. “Inigo, put the curtains up before I fell off the bunk. I called out to the pitch black. “Krshhhh”. As Inigo put the curtains up, moon light flooded the room, and I nearly cried out in shock and terror as something else did too. It was a shadow. I looked outside and saw a mysterious figure, silhouetted in the moonlight. It was sitting and watching, silently waiting. I turned away, sacred in my skin. I fell into a disturbed sleep. I woke up the next morning to find that it was Jarahh, out on night duty.

“Ooommph!”. As I pivoted off the board, a sense of excitement coursed through my veins. Almost there! I got back onto the board, and paddled out a bit further. Yes! A huge wave! And coming right at me! I started paddling as it got closer. And then, heart beating wildly, I jumped forward, the wave bringing me back to shore. It was one of my fondest memories.
