Senior Speech Day

Principal's Address

From Dr Andrew Parry

It gives me great pleasure to address you at our 139th Speech Day. Today, we have two objectives, to acknowledge and celebrate the many achievements of our students over the year and to express our gratitude to all those who made them possible.

It is important to remind ourselves of what we are celebrating. We are celebrating a love of learning, both in and out of the classroom, that will continue to grow in each of you throughout your lives. We are celebrating our teachers for their patience, skill and immense dedication, who so generously give of themselves for the benefit of their students. We are recognising the importance of effort and striving to achieve our very best in all we do.  We are celebrating sacrifice, hard work and determination.

We have such a diversity of talents within our student body, so readily seen I the classroom, in technical and artistic endeavours in drama, music, in the realm of sport and in so many other domains.

At Kinross Wolaroi School we provide a plethora of opportunities, and I strongly encourage you all to find activities that you love where you can gain a great sense of joy and achievement. For it is the combination of all your efforts that enables us to be truly alive as a flourishing school community.

At Kinross Wolaroi we have an outstanding record of achievement of which we should be immensely proud.

We have had many memorable moments this year, for too many to mention them all here today.  However, there are some that I wish to highlight to illustrate the immense talent we have within the student body.

Once again, we have achieved considerable success with an extraordinary number of our 2025 HSC students receiving NESA nominations for excellence in Performance and Major Works.

There have been thirty-five nominations across the full spectrum of subjects:  Visual Arts, Music, Textiles and Design, Industrial Technology and Extension English speaks volumes about the skill and dedication of our students and of the superb teaching talent of our staff.

For the first time we received a nomination for Young Writers Showcase for Extension 2 English.  Holly Bennett and Nethuli Pathirana won awards at the National Young Scientist Awards and in the nationwide Banjo Patterson Writing Award, Ebony Inman won the ABC Radio’s Children’s Award.

Our Performing Arts continue to flourish.

We staged a superb Music Festival and our program continues to dominate the Orange Eisteddfod, our ensembles winning every section they entered, as well as many other open sections.

Isabel Wong was selected as a violinist in the Australian Youth Orchestra.

Our choirs and orchestra performed superbly at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at Holy Trinity Church before a packed congregation from the local community.

This year’s musical production of Aladdin was a marvellous success continuing to build upon the outstanding reputation we have for musical theatre.

Our debaters had an excellent year with our Year 11’s winning the Majoy’s Cup, and reached the Grand Final of the Australian National Debating virtual competition, and our Year 10s contested the Grand Final of the Dudley Cup.

In the realm of sport we have also seen many notable performances.

Our Cricket Club won Statewide knockout tournaments winning the Wiburd and Douglas Shield Grand Finals, the Centenary Cup team finished as Minor Premiers.

Our Open Tennis team won the ISA competition.

We have had NSW representatives in:

  • Polocrosse
  • Equestrian
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rugby
  • Rowing
  • Swimming
  • Softball
  • Cricket.

As well as representing NSW All Schools, Phoebe Johnston also played in the Open Professional Women’s Cricket team – the Breakers.

Our Girls’ Open Rugby team were Premiership winners in the ACT competition and five girls were selected to represent the ACT Brumbies.

We have had several national selections:

  • Oscar Cleary in the Australian Schools Rugby team – Oscar has also secured a contract with the ACT Brumbies and has been awarded the George Gregan Scholarship to the University of Canberra
  • Lilly Clarke in the Australian Rugby 7s, and
  • Bel Arnot, Brody Steele, Chloe Provost and Chloe McGilvray were National Age Swimming representatives
  • Bel Arnot has been awarded the Hancock Swimming Scholarship to Bond University
  • Tess Shanahan represented Australia in Alpine Skiing

And in Rowing, Kinross Wolaroi was the top performing school on the medal tally at the Australian National Championships with ten medals and also at the NSW State Championships with 11 medals.

Both our First and Second Schoolgirls VIII were Head of the River Champions.

We sent two crews to race at Henley, the most prestigious rowing event on the International calendar with our Girls VIII performing superbly only to be beaten by the British  National Champions in the semi-final.

We staged some very successful educational and culturally enlightening tours:

  • Visual art students to Italy
  • PDHPE students to the United States
  • An Indigenous Cultural immersion tour to the Northern Territory
  • Geography and Biology undertook a field work experience on the Barrier Reef

Throughout the year, our student leaders demonstrated courage and commitment in their desire to make our school and broader community a finer place. Their actions revealed a genuine care and concern for the welfare of others, particularly those whose life journeys have been less fortunate than our own.

It has been wonderful to observe how our Round Square philosophy is becoming firmly embedded in what we do at Kinross providing a framework for us to explore so many experiences for the benefit of ourselves and importantly, for others.

I’d like to express my sincere thanks to our Round Square Leaders, our committee members and our passionate staff, for their energy, initiative and enthusiasm over 2025.

We have continued to be engaged in many valuable service initiatives such as:

  • Supporting aged care residents at Wontama with our intergenerational project
  • Our boarding students volunteering to assist with food service for the needy on Saturday evenings at the Uniting Church
  • This year we have once again made and delivered over 6,000 sandwiches to local schools around Orange to support students who don’t have lunch
  • Raised over $20,000 to support the McGrath Foundation through Pink Stumps Day
  • We also raised over $20,000 through the World Greatest Shave for the Leukemia Foundation
  • Next week we will host our first Sony Camp which provides respite for disabled children and their families

The great support these initiatives receive is a clear reflection of the very special community we have here at Kinross Wolaroi.

Our Cadets had an excellent year providing challenge and adventure for over 350 students.

It has been fabulous to see how our Duke of Edinburgh program continues to grow with 2025 being our most successful year on record with 14 Gold awards, 18 Silver and 50 Bronze.

Our International exchange program continues to flourish; this year we sent 20 students overseas and hosted 21 from eight school in seven countries.  We also had 17 students undertake national exchanges with fellow Australian Round Square Schools.

The Environmental Group launched initiatives such as:

  • Return and earn
  • Book and clothes swap in the Anderson Centre Eco hub and students attended the HICES Environmental Expo in Sydney
  • Students also engaged in the 10 4 10 Leadership program
  • The UN Youth Summit
  • And Zoom postcards with International schools and the Round Square International Service Project in India

Congratulations to all those students who have engaged in so many truly valuable educational and character building experiences.

Strategic Plan

2025 has been a year of exceptional progress and commitment in delivering the Strategic Plan’s education priorities, setting a dynamic trajectory for our school community. At the heart of this success is Innovation for Learning, ensuring engaging, relevant experiences that develop the attributes of the KWS Graduate Profile.

This integrated approach is strengthened by evolving academic and wellbeing provisions and the introduction of a K-12 Quality Assurance Framework to drive continuous improvement.

Foundational achievements include the new Positive Behaviour Policy and Student Code of Conduct, promoting respect, responsibility, and resilience across staff, students, and families. The Boarding Culture Project further enhances belonging, responsibility, and relationships within the boarding community.

Staff capability has been elevated through significant professional development:

  • whole-school training in the globally recognised SEARCH Framework with Professor Lea Waters;
  • the launch of the first LIFT cohort to lead curriculum innovation;
  • implementation of the Peer Observation Program for cross-Faculty collaboration; and
  • the establishment of the Years 5–8 Literacy Project Team focused on improving writing outcomes through research-based strategies.

Structural enhancements underpin educational excellence. The Co-Curricular Review ensures programs remain robust and aligned with the School’s Vision. Policy Writing Teams have contemporised key areas such as Assessment, Learning Enhancement, and Wellbeing.

A restructured timetable for 2026 supports electives, wellbeing lessons, and a vibrant House and Community program.

These initiatives reflect a courageous, collaborative, and evidence-informed approach to building a thriving school climate and delivering leading educational practice.

Our active and supportive P&F continue to do marvellous things to enhance the spirit and life of our special community.  They have staged many events for our families and staff, as well as providing financial support for a number of projects.  I am hugely grateful to this highly engaged and very positive committee that does so much to promote friendship and community.

All of which I have shared, is but a sample of the achievements and success of 2025. We are an immensely busy place that achieves much in such a broad range of endeavours.

Schools are about people and all that has been achieved is the result of immense hard work, dedication, commitment and skill of many.

My colleagues, the teaching and support staff are our most crucial asset. They are committed to discovering the immense potential that lies within all our students so that they can become the best they can be.  I thank all our staff who have invested so much of themselves for the benefit of our students. I gratefully acknowledge their outstanding contribution.

Many people make an immensely valuable contribution to the life of the school:

  • Our School Council, under the thoughtful, calm and measured leadership of Rev Andrew Cunningham.
  • The Executive and Senior Leadership Teams
  • Academic Forum and Wellbeing Committee
  • Our Boarding team
  • And Parental Support Groups.

All work tirelessly to serve the interests of our students and I am most grateful for their support and dedication.

Significant Contribution to the Life of the School

It is the practice that at the conclusion of each year the Principal presents an award to a member of staff who has made a significant contribution to the life of the school. Once again, I have been inundated with many worthy nominations – a clear indication of the outstanding calibre of our staff.

It gives me great pleasure to announce this award for 2025 to one of our many gifted and inspirational teachers. The Principal’s Initiative Award for 2025 goes to Mr James Bunting.

James is only in his first year of teaching at Kinross Wolaroi but already he has made an outstanding impact.  His presence in the classroom with his engaging and inspirational enthusiasm, his energy and generosity in restoring the PLC tennis courts over the past Term – just last weekend James spent 16 hours working with the PLC girls as they resurfaced the tennis courts – and for his hard work in establishing a student newspaper – the Orange Pulp News – has been immensely impressive. His relentless encouragement of students to engage in the composition of the newspaper and the end result is awesome.
